Join a User Group: It’s Good for Your Professional Health

Being a member of an Oracle user group can be good for your professional health. According to studies by Oracle, the 330,000 worldwide members of the 870 user groups associated with Oracle are more satisfied customers than nonmembers.

“If you are a member of a user group you have more contacts, you network more, and you learn as much as you can about Oracle products and services or your industry,” says Mary Lou Dopart, senior director of Oracle’s Global Customer Programs. She adds that Oracle doesn’t sponsor or directly support the independent user group aside from providing speakers for meetings and conferences and soliciting feedback from users.

Groups devoted to public sector interests, including government and higher education, are among the most active and successful, Dopart says. “Because there’s no competition between them,” she says. “It seems as though it’s written into their job descriptions to help make everybody else in the public sector more successful.”

The roster includes the Higher Education User Group, which, with 20,000 members around the world, is one of the larger organizations. Its charter is to help technology professionals optimize IT systems used at colleges and universities. In addition, some of the larger user groups, such as Quest, OAUG, and UKOUG, include special interest communities focused on the public sector. In addition, the Oracle HCM Users Group includes a special interest group devoted to U.S. Defense Department issues.
