Best Practices for Capturing Knowledge: Activity Streams As an enterprise grows, it becomes difficult to effectively scale business-specific knowledge. What was once learned though casual conversation becomes lost to geography and fragmented teams that are now focused on a narrow aspect of your business. Oracle WebCenter Suite provides Activity Streams—a channel that enables the capture and distribution of knowledge that was once only possible in an enterprise's infancy. Similar to Facebook's wall, Activity Streams collect and broadcast the activities of a specific individual. Activities are collected from business tools across the enterprise such as discussion forums, document repositories, and applications. Now some of you may be thinking, is this just extra noise? Where does it provide value? To answer this, let's examine two key characteristics of an Activity Stream. - Personal discovery channel. Activity Streams are scoped through an individual's social connections and preferences, enabling employees to passively keep up-to-date on contributions from their peers and members of their project teams. Unlike broadly scoped corporate communications, this channel provides a common glue around these activities and an opportunity to unlock tacit knowledge that would otherwise go undiscovered.
- Common business context. Activity Streams inherently showcase activities generated by individuals sharing a common business goal. Though employees may be working within unrelated systems, the stream wraps their activities in a common context, surfacing the outputs of these efforts. This presents users with material related to their domain of expertise, enabling them to quickly solve similar business problems.
Activity Streams require minimal effort to implement and can be placed within the context of enterprise collaboration, providing an immediate wrapper of business context and a channel of discovery around your activities. It educates nearly 115,000 students and employs almost 27,000 faculty and staff. TAMUS found it difficult and time-consuming to track resources for its US$700 million research activities annually, as well as coordinate work across organizations and manage projects involving more than one institution. To simplify the research administration process and ensure that researchers have all the information they need at their fingertips, TEES, one of the agencies of TAMUS, turned to Oracle WebCenter Suite. Oracle WebCenter Suite—with tight integration with Oracle Universal Content Management—provides TEES with a modern user experience platform that is seamlessly integrated with existing systems. Enterprise 2.0 capabilities, including wikis and blogs, allow researchers to share information with internal and external stakeholders, which increases engagement and collaboration, and makes the research process more transparent for all constituents. In recognition of Texas A&M University System’s Enterprise 2.0 deployment, they were awarded the Enterprise 2.0 Leader Award at Oracle OpenWorld 2010. | | Back to Top | | SPECIAL OFFERS | White Paper: Experiencing the New Social Enterprise Social media and networking tools, popularly known as Web 2.0 technologies, are rapidly transforming user expectations of enterprise systems.
