New Release Provides Enhanced Integration and Caching with Oracle Database 10g; Building on Core Strengths of Real-Time Performance and Reliability
Febraruy 13, 2007
Oracle today announced the general availability of Oracle® TimesTen In-Memory Database Release 7, which features enhanced integration and caching with Oracle Database 10g to meet the instant response times and high-throughput requirements of real-time enterprises. Underscoring Oracle's commitment to support the wide-ranging data management needs of its customers, this release enables organizations to accelerate business processes and tap real-time business intelligence in breakthrough customer-facing applications.
As business agility proves to be a critical success factor, organizations must make business decisions faster, bring data analysis into minute-by-minute decision making and respond to users in real time. An extremely reliable and high performance in-memory database, Oracle TimesTen is used in a wide range of industries such as financial services, telecommunications and defense, where real-time applications are essential to business success. Oracle TimesTen 7 delivers dynamic database caching of Oracle Databases for performance-critical enterprise applications such as high volume transaction processing; business activity monitoring; real-time business intelligence; and customer relationship management and customer self-service. For example, call centers using Oracle TimesTen can dramatically improve efficiency and offer deeper personalization for a richer user experience through instant access to information and the ability to quickly address the most common customer questions.
"This is the first major release of the Oracle TimesTen database that has been entirely developed within Oracle, following Oracle's acquisition of TimesTen in June 2005," said Jim Groff, senior vice president, Oracle. "The tight integration between Oracle TimesTen for real-time data management in the middle tier and the Oracle Database for enterprise-wide data management is unique in the industry. It delivers outstanding support for real-time business functions today, and an architecture to meet the data management demands for future Service-Oriented Architectures."
"As a leading provider of convergent mediation, charging and provisioning solutions to telecom service providers, Comptel is accustomed to exceeding the demanding performance and scalability requirements of our customers," said Mr Kari Sutela, vice president, Technology, Comptel. "We have been an Oracle TimesTen customer for many years and are very pleased with the release 7 product. Our testing shows that with Oracle TimesTen 7 we will continue to outpace the increasingly stringent performance and scalability requirements of our industry, which will help maintain Comptel's leadership."
Tighter Integration Delivers Unique, Real-Time Caching to the Enterprise
Oracle TimesTen 7 delivers several key enhancements to help customers capture, access, and manage information significantly faster, including:
Data type compatibility — familiar Oracle Database 10g data types are now available in Oracle TimesTen 7 for easier application development and caching data in memory;
New SQL features — Oracle TimesTen 7 includes enhanced SQL functionality, with similar semantics and behaviors as Oracle Database 10g;
Globalization functionality — more than 50 database character sets and 80 languages are now supported with Oracle TimesTen 7;
Automatic data aging and on-demand data loading — when used as a cache, data in Oracle TimesTen 7 can be dynamically loaded and automatically aged out of memory; and,
Cross-tier high availability — data can be automatically synchronized across replicated Oracle TimesTen databases and Oracle Databases
The new real-time caching capabilities of Oracle TimesTen 7 support a wide variety of applications where instant access to specific types of data from an Oracle database is required. Oracle TimesTen 7 provides out-of-the-box support for the most common caching scenarios:
Dynamic, on-demand caching — often used in customer-facing applications to load data for a specific customer when they first arrive and add or update data as the interaction progresses. In a call-center or customer portal application, this helps speed access to information for the specific group of customers currently being served;
Sliding time window caching — useful in business intelligence and analytics applications, where the last 10 minutes of production data or the last 30 days of retail sales data are heavily used for real-time decision-making; and,
Reference data caching — useful for customer-facing Web sites or business process acceleration, where product catalogs, business rules and metadata are heavily accessed.
In each of these scenarios, Oracle TimesTen 7 automatically manages the data movement between the cache and the underlying enterprise Oracle database, simplifying application development. In addition, Oracle TimesTen 7 also supports Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle SQL Developer and Oracle JDeveloper.
