Oracle Press Release

Oracle Sets World Record Result on SAP® Sales and Distribution-Parallel Standard Application Benchmark Running the SAP Enhancement Package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0

Oracle Outperforms IBM and Microsoft on x86-Based Platform

Redwood Shores, Calif – June 28, 2010

News Facts

Demonstrating the superior performance and high availability of the Oracle solution, including Oracle Database 11g and Oracle’s new Sun x86-based server, Oracle today announced a world record result on the SAP® Sales and Distribution-Parallel (SD-Parallel) standard application benchmark running the SAP enhancement package 4 for the SAP ERP 6.0 application(1).
Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real Application Clusters running on two of the newest Sun Fire x4470 servers, each with four Intel® Xeon® x7560 2.26 GHz (eight) processors, Oracle Solaris operating system and Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array with FlashFire technology, achieved 21,000 SAP SD-Parallel benchmark users.
Oracle’s eight-processor result demonstrated more than double the performance of the best published four-processor results on the two-tier SAP SD standard application benchmark that used Intel ® Xeon ® X7560-based hardware, which was running IBM DB2 on IBM System x3850 X5 server(2).
Additionally, Oracle surpassed an eight-processor Microsoft SQL Server result, running on an HP DL980 G7 with Windows, of 18,180 SAP SD benchmark users on the two-tier SAP SD standard application benchmark(3)(4).

Supporting Quote

“This benchmark result demonstrates that Oracle has delivered better performance results than IBM or Microsoft when running the SAP SD-Parallel standard application benchmark,” said Juan Loaiza, senior vice president, Systems Technology, Oracle. “Furthermore, the Microsoft and IBM benchmark results are not on a highly available platform. With this result, Oracle has demonstrated that Oracle Real Application Clusters can produce higher performance while running on a fully active and highly available cluster.”

(4) Note regarding SAP SD-Parallel standard application benchmark vs. SAP SD standard application benchmark: The SAP SD-Parallel standard application benchmark runs the business transactions of the SAP SD standard application benchmark on more than one active database server. To create maximum load and contention for the database and the application servers, the data is distributed round robin. See benchmark description at www.sap.com/benchmark for details. The SAP SD-Parallel benchmark consists of the same transactions and user interaction steps as the SAP SD benchmark. This means that the SAP SD-Parallel standard application benchmark runs the same business processes as the SAP SD standard application benchmark. The difference between the benchmarks is the technical data distribution.
