Oracle Sets World Record Result on SAP® Sales and Distribution-Parallel Standard Application Benchmark

Oracle Database 11g on x86 Cluster running Oracle Solaris Outperforms IBM DB2 on POWER7 Server

Showcasing the superior performance and scalability of Oracle’s software and hardware, Oracle today announced a world-record result on the SAP® Sales and Distribution-Parallel (SD-Parallel) standard application benchmark running the SAP enhancement package 4 for the SAP ERP 6.0 application(1).
Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real Application Clusters running on four Intel® Xeon® x7560-based Sun Fire X4470 servers and Oracle Solaris and Sun Storage 6180 Array, achieved 40,000 SAP SD-Parallel benchmark users.
Oracle’s x86 clustered configuration exceeded the performance of IBM’s recently published result on the two-tier SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) standard application benchmark running IBM DB2 on an IBM Power 780 server (2,3) while delivering near-perfect scalability(4) with high-availability, clearly distinguishing Oracle over IBM
Oracle’s result also delivered more than double the performance of HP’s best-published result that used Intel Xeon X7560-based hardware (3,5).

(1) The SAP SD-Parallel standard application benchmark performed on August 17, 2010, by Oracle in Burlington, MA, has been certified with the following data: 40,000 SAP SD-Parallel benchmark users, (world-record SAP SD-Parallel, Unicode result) 0.86 seconds average dialog response time, 4,420,330 fully processed order line items per hour, 13,261,000 dialog steps per hour, 221,020 SAPS. Server configuration: 4 servers (4 active nodes): Oracle/Sun Fire X4470, 4 processors / 32 cores / 64 threads, Intel Xeon Processor X7560, 2.26 GHz, 64 KB L1 cache and 256 KB L2 cache per core, 24 MB L3 cache per processor, 256 GB main memory. Average database request time (dialog/update): 0.013 sec / 0.031 sec. CPU utilization of central server: 99 percent. (3) Note regarding SAP SD-Parallel standard application benchmark vs. SAP SD standard application benchmark: The SAP SD-Parallel standard application benchmark runs the business transactions of the SAP SD standard application benchmark on more than one active database server. To create maximum load and contention for the database and the application servers, the data is distributed round robin. See benchmark description at www.sap.com/benchmark for details. The SAP SD-Parallel benchmark consists of the same transactions and user interaction steps as the SAP SD benchmark.
