Open Universities Australia Realizes Valuable Savings and Simplifies IT with Oracle VM
Deploys Virtualized Oracle Database and Oracle’s PeopleSoft Applications to Production, Development and Disaster Recovery Environments in Campus-Wide Infrastructure Upgrade

To address the challenge of ballooning costs, due to ever-increasing data demands requiring ongoing hardware upgrades, Open Universities Australia (OUA) has virtualized the database and application layers of its IT infrastructure. To help ensure it would achieve its desired performance results, OUA put Oracle products to the test. The cost savings and performance results clearly identified significant advantages.
Facing aggressive growth targets, infrastructure upgrades every three years, and a zero-outage deployment model, OUA needed a solution that integrated with its current IT environment while allowing the organization to control rising costs.
OUA’s tests found that the virtualized environment provided more flexibility for its current work load and virtually no performance degradation for end users. In addition, OUA deployed the virtualized Oracle Database and PeopleSoft applications to its cloud-based production and disaster recovery environments as well as its hosted development environment.
Using Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Real Application Clusters. OUA was able to deploy a highly available, production environment all in a day.
Implementing Oracle VM enabled OUA to save over $300,000. In addition, as over 75 percent of the University’s database now exists in a private cloud environment, OUA gained the flexibility to grow the IT environments over time by adding incremental hardware resources. OUA also reduced its database server footprint by 20 percent.
Oracle VM has been deployed at OUA since January 2013.
