Media Markt China Goes Live with Oracle® Retail Merchandising Suite to Support Launch in China
Rapid Oracle Retail Implementation Facilitates Shanghai Store Openings
Redwood Shores, CA. – April 27, 2011
Media Markt, Europe’s largest consumer electronics retailer, has implemented a suite of Oracle® Retail merchandising applications to support its expansion into China.
A collaboration between parent company Media-Saturn Group and Foxconn, Media Markt entered China by opening its second largest global store with over 9,500 square meters of space devoted to 45,000 consumer electronics products.
With an aggressive Chinese growth strategy in place, Media Markt wanted to establish a single, flexible retail platform to manage core merchandising processes around multiple items and locations, integrate with other platforms in the business and provide the scalability to grow rapidly in line with the planned business expansion.
The Oracle Retail applications are supporting merchandising, supply chain, stores and distribution center processes, facilitating the opening of the first two Media Markt stores in Shanghai in November 2010 and more recently, in February 2011.
To support its business model in China, Media Markt chose Oracle Retail based on proven capability and success of rapid and cost-effective implementation of the core retail platform in the region.
The implementation, which included specific adaptations required for the Chinese market, was achieved in 12 months by a collaborative, distributed team leveraging an agile SCRUM project methodology.
The integrated applications provide a holistic view to management, store operations, inventory and supply chain teams promoting a better understanding of merchandising requirements, helping to optimize product availability and pricing strategies to maximize sales opportunities in the highly competitive and complex Chinese market.
Media Markt has become the first customer in China to implement Oracle Retail Release 13.1.
“Our investment in Oracle Retail is a vital part of our long-term strategy to develop the Media Markt brand and successfully grow our business in this region,” said HaJo Deeg, Vice President IT/IM, Media Markt China. “Oracle’s commitment and support to our China strategy has been an important element in the success to date.”
“Oracle values building productive and long-term relationships with our customers,” said Steve Ouzounian, Group Vice President, JAPAC, Oracle Retail. “Our collaborative relationship has helped to rapidly deliver the retail platform that Media Markt required to not only develop its first store but continue expansion and drive performance within China.”
Media Markt is Europe’s Number One electrical goods retailer. The success enjoyed by the company, which was founded in 1979 and is housed under the roof of Media-Saturn-Holding GmbH, is based on a unique selection of low-priced brand-name products, competent staff, excellent service, a distinctive advertising presence and a decentralized organizational structure. Each general manager is a shareholder in his own store and is thus responsible for the products offered, as well as for pricing, personnel and marketing. At present, Media Markt has 2 stores in China and 617 stores in 15 European and Asian countries.
