Coexistence is one answer. A key component of the Oracle Fusion Applications strategy, coexistence allows IT organizations to adopt new applications modules over time and add new capabilities to their foundation of existing software investments.
This modular, building-block approach is possible because Oracle Fusion Applications are built using industry-standard service-oriented architecture (SOA) technology designed to ease integration between software platforms. Standards-based SOA means that organizations can adopt Oracle Fusion Applications modules and make them interoperate with their current systems without having to undergo costly upgrades and code rewriting.
For example, some organizations are choosing to expand the capabilities of their existing Oracle E-Business Suite implementations by plugging in new modules, such as Oracle Fusion Sourcing, Oracle Fusion Project Portfolio Management, Oracle Fusion Human Capital Management, Oracle Fusion Financials, or a multitude of other choices.
“This is a new approach to enterprise applications, because we are not talking about modernizations that replace a complete software suite so organizations can get new features,” says Amy Andrews, director of functional architecture for Oracle Fusion Applications. “With SOA, this approach can also extend to integrations with third-party applications that aren’t part of the Oracle footprint,” she adds. “If you are operating on a system that is based on SOA standards and SOA services, it is possible to easily make changes and do new things.”
