When management at Tecumseh Products Company decided in 2004 to scale back the firm’s many regional IT operations and consolidate corporate financial and manufacturing data using Oracle E-Business Suite, it looked for a data center strategy that could grow and evolve with the applications. Tecumseh chose to purchase Sun [now Oracle’s] hardware and outsource its hosting to USi, now part of AT&T.
The collection of Oracle hardware in use at Tecumseh today includes a 12-CPU Sun Fire server in the production data center, an 8-CPU Sun Fire server in a secondary data center, and several additional Sun Fire servers spread throughout both data centers. More than 10 Oracle’s Sun servers in total are deployed in the company’s data centers. Tecumseh owns this equipment but has never laid hands on the physical machines, because the hardware was shipped directly to AT&T.
Leaders at Tecumseh anticipate that Oracle hardware will continue to be central to the company’s IT operations. “When Oracle bought Sun, that was a positive thing in my mind,” says Doug Yenor, former CIO and current IT advisor. “We purchased Sun hardware because it fit into what we were trying to do. When we renew our contract with our hosting company, we’ll also be due for a hardware refresh. Sun hardware was a good choice for us, and so the new hardware could be Oracle Exadata. It’s definitely something that we’re excited about.”
In addition to maintaining Tecumseh’s Oracle hardware—Tecumseh’s staff maintains the software itself—AT&T manages Tecumseh’s global network and e-mail system. “They have the infrastructure in place to support all these countries and complement our whole IT footprint,” Yenor says. “One of the driving factors behind working with AT&T is that they created what I thought was a really good technical architecture strategy.”
