The most obvious ways Oracle Fusion Applications will differ from traditional enterprise applications lie in the best-of-the-best combination of Oracle’s current applications and leading technology foundation—making businesses more innovative and productive. But something else will set Oracle Fusion Applications apart from the competition—organizations will not be forced to do a full-scale upgrade to benefit.
The Oracle Fusion Applications platform was built with flexibility in mind, so companies can selectively add modules if and when it makes business sense. “CIOs can leverage their existing landscape; they don’t have to do rip and replace,” says Jim Hayes, managing director of Accenture.
In the meantime, organizations can continue to take advantage of their existing software investments in Oracle Applications and third-party programs.
“This offers organizations a variety of choices, ranging from continuing with existing enterprise software investments to upgrading to select Oracle Fusion Applications and directing them to interoperate with the existing applications in the Oracle suite,” says Steve Miranda, vice president of applications development at Oracle.
Here’s a plan for IT leaders plotting the future of their enterprise applications:
1. Upgrade to the latest release. Evaluate the latest Oracle Applications releases such as Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.3, PeopleSoft Enterprise 9.1, Siebel Customer Relationship Management 8.2, and JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1 for the additional value they bring to the business. In addition to gaining value today, you will be in a position to upgrade to Oracle Fusion Applications in the future, if and when you choose.
2. Adopt standards-based technology. Consider Oracle Fusion Middleware for new projects and developing skill sets in technologies such as Oracle Application Development Framework, Oracle content management products, Oracle SOA Suite, and Oracle WebCenter. These tools will help you integrate, extend, and manage your applications environment today and prepare you to add Oracle Fusion Applications if and when you choose.
3. Adopt a coexistence strategy. Add Oracle Fusion Applications modules to your existing environment or implement “pillars” (human capital management, sales, financials, or supply chain management applications) to extend the power of Oracle Fusion Applications into your applications portfolio.
4. Embrace the complete Oracle Fusion Applications suite (if and when appropriate.)
