New version features improved web and workflow integration.
Do more with less—it’s the anthem of enterprises everywhere working to strike a balance between customer demands for better results at lower costs and challenging economic conditions. Oracle’s Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management 8.0, which was introduced in the fall of 2010, helps users improve the project portfolio management (PPM) process and generate better economic results with critical workflow enhancements that facilitate collaboration between everyone involved in PPM.
Research sponsored by Oracle and conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2009 identifies a number of critical trends driving improvements in PPM software. More than 50 percent of respondents surveyed believe that competency in PPM helps maintain competitiveness because it enables the delivery of projects using fewer resources, while 38 percent contend that PPM enables organizations to prepare for the future and secure a competitive advantage. In response to the economic downturn, 40 percent of respondents surveyed reported that they spent more time with up-front project planning and due diligence in 2009 compared to 2007.
One of the biggest enhancements to Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management 8.0 is that the software now features automated workflow using Oracle Business Process Management 11g. Now, individuals who aren’t working within the PPM system but may have a role in approving or reviewing a new project don’t actually have to be using Primavera applications. E-mail-based workflow notifications will allow them to take action in the workflow process.
“Bringing workflow enablement to the latest version of Primavera improves the whole collaboration process,” says Nancy Allen, vice president of product marketing for the Primavera product line at Oracle. “The system automatically funnels the information to the right person and eliminates the latency that is often part of the decision-making process.”
Another critical enhancement to Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management 8.0 is that it is now 100 percent Web-based, making the software much easier to deploy because users no longer install software on their local computers. Users can self-host, or they can elect to use an offering hosted through Oracle On Demand to minimize IT costs. “Being 100 percent Web-based simplifies deployment options and cost of ownership overall,” says Allen.
Being 100 percent Web-based also makes Primavera much more accessible for all types of users because most are very familiar with Web-based forms and software. “This latest version is very configurable and scalable,” says Allen. “It is very easy for an IT group to configure simple user interfaces for the casual user, while offering more-detailed and -comprehensive interfaces for advanced users.”
