Senior Vice President Thomas Kurian explains Oracle's unique strategy for middleware and how customers can develop business processes that are capable of integrating all existing Oracle applications.
Oracle Fusion is a process that combines our middleware and our applications—Siebel, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, and Oracle E-Business Suite—integrating them through Oracle Fusion Middleware, our middleware suite that is designed to work with all our existing applications. One of the issues inherent in today's typical enterprise comes from having multiple applications—customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP), human resources—and multiple instances of those applications. Each instance is being opened for self-service use, and each has username/password combinations to manage, which means you end up with a very large user population. And, as organizations deploy applications, they often change the business processes within those applications to meet requirements that result from business growth and change. That's why we've made it clear that Oracle Fusion Middleware is the critical first step toward the next-generation enterprise—and customers are already seeing benefits.
Customers can use Oracle SOA Suite to develop business processes that can be quickly and easily changed and are capable of integrating all our existing applications. For example, if customers want to build a business process to integrate CRM with ERP, they can use Oracle SOA Suite to build business processes that integrate these applications. If they want to pull data from different instances of the applications, or look across information from Oracle's CRM or ERP applications, they can use Oracle Business Intelligence Suite to get a unified view of business intelligence across our applications. Additionally, if customers want to make it easy for their employees to do work within our applications, we can provide a common user interface using Oracle WebCenter. As customers open up applications for self-service use and increase the cost of security administration, our Oracle Identity Management Suite can centralize managing security for end users, lowering cost and improving security.
The first step for maximizing an SOA is to model the business process that you want by defining exactly how, for example, you want order-to-cash processing to work. Next, you generate the definition of the business process so a developer can implement it. Connecting to the different Oracle application suites is accomplished through Oracle Enterprise Service Bus.
We've also used SOA technology to build Oracle Application Integration Architecture, which are prepackaged integrations that connect across all the Oracle Applications families. Bundled as Process Integration Packs, these packs include everything you need, from Web services to Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) process maps, to quickly and easily implement your integration.
