A new green jet age
A volatile fuel market, high prices, and the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have all caused airlines to work on developing viable, renewable sources of jet fuel, including cooking oil, alcohol, an inedible weed called cemelina, and algae.
The Carbon War Room, founded by Virgin Airways founder Sir Richard Branson, recently launched Renewable Jet Fuels, a Website and online database that shows a comparison of potential fuel suppliers. To date, 23 major airlines, including Qantas, Thai Airways, and United Continental, have pledged to use renewable jet fuels with lower carbon impact.
