Check out the Urban Beehive: a new concept in sustainably produced food developed by Netherlands-based Philips Design. It looks like a modern-art sculpture, but to the hundreds of bees inside, it’s home sweet home. The Urban Beehive is part of the company’s Microbial Home design project. “Designers have an obligation to explore solutions that are by nature less energy-consuming and nonpolluting,” says Clive van Heerden, senior director of design-led innovation at Philips Design.
The indoor hive consists of two parts: on one side an amber-tinted glass dome that houses the honeycomb and the bee colony, and on the other side an entry passage with flower pot. To harvest the honey without letting loose a swarm of escapees, you can release smoke into the hive to calm the bees before the dome is opened.
