Announcing Oracle Database 12c: The World's First Database Designed for the Cloud

In July 2013, Oracle announced availability of Oracle Database 12c, which enables customers to quickly reap all the benefits of cloud computing with its groundbreaking multitenant architecture.

Plug into the Cloud with Oracle Multitenant
From Oracle Real Application Clusters to Oracle Automatic Storage Management, successive Oracle releases have enabled customers to standardize, consolidate, and automate database services on the cloud. However, a key element—rapid, easy database consolidation—was still needed.

"Now Oracle Multitenant, a key component of Oracle Database 12c, speeds and simplifies consolidation—without requiring changes to existing applications," says Willie Hardie, vice president, Oracle Database Product Management.

With Oracle Multitenant, a single container database can now host many pluggable databases. Each database that has been consolidated—or plugged into—the multitenant container looks and feels to applications exactly the same as the preconsolidated version.

"Besides speeding the journey to cloud, consolidation also dramatically simplifies management—a huge boost to organizations managing hundreds, even thousands, of databases," says Hardie.

Maximize IT Resources, from Increased Availability to Big Data Support
The latest generation of Oracle Database also includes a raft of new features and enhancements to maximize the value of IT resources, improve service levels, and much more. Key new capabilities include

  • Automatic data optimization. This feature monitors the data's age as well as its usage—or temperature—and then automatically moves it to the appropriate storage and compression tiers.
  • Data redaction and other in-depth security features. In addition to new auditing and privilege analysis capabilities, the new data redaction feature enforces controls inside the database—not in the application—by redacting data before returning it to the application.
  • Big data value acceleration. To simplify big data analysis, the new release simplifies the discovery of business event sequences such as financial transactions, network logs, and clickstream logs, and provides new in-database predictive algorithms for more in-depth analysis of enterprise data.
  • Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture. This release includes an expanded set of features to ensure continuous access to enterprise data, including the ability to extend zero-data-loss standby protection to any distance—not limited by latency.
