Application-Engineered Storage: Coengineering Differentiates Oracle’s Products
As our tag line famously states, Oracle builds hardware and software engineered to work together. Application-engineered storage is a great example of the slogan in action: Oracle’s storage systems are coengineered with Oracle Database and Oracle Applications. Oracle Database and Oracle Applications are made storage-aware, and storage systems are made database- and application-aware—coengineering that leads to unique features available only on Oracle storage.
For example, Oracle Database 12c includes two important features that will be very beneficial to customers and are available exclusively on Oracle storage products.
- Oracle’s Intelligent Storage Protocol feature enables the database to communicate directly with Sun ZFS Storage Appliance and dynamically autotunes critical storage parameters to optimize database performance with Oracle storage systems. This virtually eliminates manual processes and reduces administration and provisioning time by more than 65 percent.
- Oracle’s new automatic data optimization capability, available with Oracle Advanced Compression, automatically balances and optimizes performance based on usage patterns and database heat maps. This enables a maximum storage footprint reduction using Oracle Hybrid Columnar Compression, which typically compresses historical data by 12X, and improves query performance an average of 5X.
These two features of Oracle Database lower storage TCO by reducing the amount of storage capacity required and enabling storage administrators to be more productive and spend more time on strategic or revenue-generating projects. A recent TCO study by Wikibon, a next-generation analyst firm, found that a competitive network-attached storage system costs 307 percent more to own and operate than Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance.
The ongoing codevelopment of Oracle storage and Oracle applications will further demonstrate Oracle’s commitment to delivering hardware and software engineered to work together and deliver additional value for customers. Customers are better served by storage, database, and applications that are engineered, tested, certified, deployed, upgraded, managed, and supported together—by one vendor.
