New Release of Oracle Big Data Appliance Delivers 33 Percent More Storage per Rack

In November 2013, Oracle launched Oracle Big Data Appliance X4-2, which delivers the entire Cloudera Enterprise technology stack and 33 percent more storage capacity for a total of 864 terabytes per rack—plus comprehensive security capabilities including authentication, authorization, and auditing.

Oracle Big Data Appliance X4-2 is a comprehensive and secure engineered system optimized to run Cloudera's entire platform for big data, Cloudera Enterprise, at a low overall total cost of ownership. To meet diverse computing requirements, it includes

  • Cloudera Distribution for Apache Hadoop
  • Oracle NoSQL Database
  • Cloudera Impala
  • Cloudera Search
When combined with Oracle Big Data Connectors and Oracle Exadata, Oracle Big Data Appliance X4-2 delivers the industry's only complete architecture to store, manage, and analyze all forms of structured and unstructured data while also minimizing data movement.

"Because this release comes with the entire Cloudera Enterprise technology stack—plus a significant increase in storage capacity—enterprises can generate new business value with big data more quickly and cost-effectively than ever before," says Çetin Özbütün, senior vice president, Data Warehousing and Big Data Technologies, Oracle.

Securing Big Data
To help keep big data secure, Oracle employees are founding committers to the Apache Sentry (incubating) project, which provides fine-grained authorization to data stored in Apache Hadoop.

Thanks to Apache Sentry, Oracle Big Data Appliance delivers a complete Hadoop security solution, including LDAP-based authorization, preconfigured Kerberos authentication, and robust centralized auditing with Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall.

Delivering Value, Driving Down Costs
Oracle Big Data Appliance already delivers significant cost savings compared to in-house Hadoop clusters—up to 39 percent.1 The latest release is expected to expand on those savings.

"Oracle's addition of Oracle Big Data Appliance X4-2 to its line of engineered systems is tremendous for customers," said Mike Olson, Cloudera founder, chief strategy officer, and chairman of the board. "It bundles the full suite of Cloudera's software on an affordable and easy-to-install system. It provides the data governance capabilities that enterprise customers require and delivers real-time analytic and processing solutions right out of the box."
