New Cloud Odyssey Events Take Data Center Leaders on a Heroic Quest

A crew of Earth’s top engineers sets its sights on the mysterious cloud planet Terranuvem. As Chief Engineer Cyrus Agarwal readies his ship, he must choose the optimal tools to carry out his mission—and prepare for a journey into the unknown.

So begins Cloud Odyssey: A Hero’s Quest, an epic new sci-fi film that kicks off Cloud Odyssey, a global series of one-day events that explore how IT organizations can achieve their most far-reaching goals via private cloud.

"On the journey to Terranuvem, Cyrus overcomes a series of trials and tribulations, and in the process, transforms himself into a hero," says Sandra Cheevers, principal product director, Oracle.

His journey sheds light on the real-world challenges of today's IT leaders—challenges that make it well worth the effort of moving to a private cloud. "Evolving business needs require DBAs and IT managers to embrace new challenges—and quickly respond to changing conditions in new and innovative ways. Cloud computing enables rapid change, saves money, and more-readily supports changing business needs," adds Cheevers.

The 75-minute Cloud Odyssey movie experience consists of five episodes, each of which is followed by a brief commentary by the event's keynote speaker. The movie is followed by "Planning, Deploying, and Delivering Your Cloud," a 90-minute session that examines diverse approaches to the cloud and proven best practices for deploying and managing a private cloud.

After a break, attendees choose from one of the following three tracks that best fits their own journey to the cloud.

  • Accelerate Your Journey to Self-Service IT: Database as a Service (DBaaS). This hands-on workshop begins with an architectural overview of a database cloud, followed by a hands-on workshop devoted to planning, building, deploying, and managing such a cloud. Attendees interact with a live enterprise cloud environment, including servers, databases, and management tools. And they learn firsthand how to deliver a self-service IT environment for DBaaS.
  • Accelerate Your Journey to Self-Service IT: Application Platform as a Service (APaaS). This workshop begins with an architectural overview for building a Java application platform cloud, followed by a hands-on workshop on planning, building, deploying, and managing such a cloud via a live cloud environment.
  • Special Edition for Cloud Architects. This session is designed specifically for cloud architects who need to build private cloud solutions that provide a sustainable cost recovery or profit model. This session covers business cases and financial modeling, capability models and operating models, business services catalogs, logical and technical architectures, technical services catalogs, and customer engagement processes.
