New Management Capabilities Maximize Oracle Database 12c Performance

To support the recently released Oracle Database12c, Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c offers several new performance management features that streamline database administration, increase resource efficiency, and reduce overall manageability costs.

"With every new release of Oracle Database, we also advance manageability for our customers, helping administrators make decisions quicker with more information rather than spending time doing analysis," says Mughees Minhas, Oracle’s vice president of Database Product Management. "In an era of rapid data growth, and flat and shrinking IT budgets, this is necessary now more than ever, as organizations are expected to manage more and more databases with the same set of resources."

Along with new performance management features, Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c delivers new capabilities to manage pluggable databases, as well as new schema-as-a-service and snap clone features. New performance management capabilities include the following.

  • Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c database express. This out-of-the-box, easy-to-use web-based management solution consumes virtually no resources at all within the Oracle Database 12c environment. An extremely lightweight solution, it leverages built-in capabilities of Oracle Database 12c—such as a built-in web server and the SQL layer of the database—thereby demanding no additional overhead on the database.

  • Enhanced real-time automatic database diagnostic monitor (ADDM). To enable database administrators to implement fixes before an application or resource disruption occurs, this self-monitoring capability tracks database performance issues and pinpoints root causes in real time. It does this by automatically scanning the Oracle Database every three seconds and immediately running diagnostics. If a problem is found, the DBA is instantly alerted.

  • Real-time database operations monitoring. To provide insight into the specific SQL or PL/SQL code causing a bottleneck, this tool monitors the collection of SQL and/or PL/SQL that make up a database operation at the business process level—the same level as the end user. As a result, database administrators can monitor a specific business process—for example a year-end books close or an extract-transform-load job involving multiple SQL and PL/SQL operations—all under a single umbrella without having to hunt for the individual SQL or PL/SQL statements associated with the business operation.

  • Database performance hub. This new console brings together a wide range of performance-related metrics into single, at-a-glance view, including active sessions, I/O, memory, CPU, real-time ADDM, real-time SQL monitoring, and active session history analytics.
