Spotlight on Oracle Exadata at Gartner Business Intelligence Summit

At Gartner’s Business Intelligence Summit in Los Angeles; Oracle Vice President Paul Rodwick was joined on stage by representatives from Polk, a leader in automotive data and marketing solutions, to discuss their experiences deploying Oracle Exadata and Oracle Business Intelligence foundation.

Kelly Garcia, VP of global application development and support at Polk, highlighted some of the challenges Polk solved by utilizing an Oracle’s BI/DW solution.
  • Users wanted easy-to-use BI tools, dashboard mashups, and mobility
  • Upward of five minute report generation was too long
Doug Miller, director of Database Development and Support at Polk, explained why Polk selected Oracle Exadata Database Machine as its data warehousing platform. “There is no other product on the market like it,” he said, referencing Oracle Exadata’s extreme performance, vast feature set, and compatibility with other products.

Since deploying Oracle Exadata, Polk has realized a tenfold improvement in database query speed, with turnaround time for approximately 80 percent of its automotive industry reports shrinking from about five minutes to just seconds. “The speed, response, and performance improvement is just astounding,” said Miller. “Polk has not had a single production outage due to Exadata and has been able to reduce storage costs by using Exadata’s hybrid columnar compression to compress data 10 to 15 times.”

Polk is now able to provide its customers with more complete information much faster, so they can make better decisions that will help them increase cars, parts, and service sales. In turn, Polk has been able to maintain its leadership position in the automotive intelligence market, and lower their IT costs along the way.

Oracle, a premier summit sponsor, was recognized in the Leaders Quadrant of Gartner’s January 27, 2011 Megavendor Comparison analysis, “Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence Platforms.”
