Oracle Fusion Middleware: Extend, Integrate, and Optimize Application Deployment

The success of many business applications is often measured in productivity and efficiency. Interestingly, maximizing both requires a multipronged strategy that dives deep into IT infrastructure, covering ground such as business process management, application integration and architecture, and the deployment platform.

Move Application Customization to the Extension Platform
“Enterprises need the agility to change business processes in response to changing requirements, but their ability to do so often depends how they have addressed three IT issues: application customization, application integration, and platform deployment,” says Markus Zirn, vice president, Oracle Fusion Middleware.

For example, many companies have customized their enterprise software to improve certain processes, but this will almost certainly hinder overall functionality long term, as companies must then recustomize the application with every upgrade. “While functionality is important, many companies focus solely on that, and neglect necessary discussions about the effects of customizations on the application lifecycle,” says Zirn.

The key is to decouple customization and integration changes from the applications, and move them to what Zirn calls the extension platform, which is centered on Oracle Business Process Management Suite. “It brings together many components of Oracle Fusion Middleware to create a better way to extend the applications without requiring changes to the applications themselves,” says Zirn. “What’s different is that the extensions live outside the applications. It’s a clear decoupling of the business logic in the packaged application from the process logic in SOA-based BPM.”

Take Integration Outside of Applications
The same strategy applies to integration. Here, the extension and integration platform is Oracle SOA Suite 11g and Oracle Application Integration Architecture, which can shave significant dollars from implementation and upgrade costs while increasing business efficiency. “Oracle’s SOA-based platform allows organizations to consume information without building tightly coupled dependencies between the tiers,” points out Zirn.

Deploy on an Optimized System
The third angle is the deployment platform in use at many enterprises. Technical performance often translates to increased business efficiency, and Oracle Exalogic has been engineered to optimize Oracle application performance. “With Oracle Exalogic, we have a deployment platform in which applications as well as extensions and integrations can run on one optimized system,” says Zirn.
