Oracle Delivers the Future of BPM While IBM Is Stuck in the Past

Business process management technology contains great promise, but it has traditionally also imposed limitations that can thwart success.

The evolution of business process management solutions has steered vendors toward developing discrete tools for disparate process types, such as document-based, system-based, human-centric, and decision-centric processes. “There was some overlap across these capabilities, but no single BPM solution really addressed every need,” says Daniel Tortorici, director of product marketing, BPM, at Oracle. “Consequently, organizations ended up adopting multiple tools, which added complexity and was bad for long-term costs, training, and maintaining skill sets.”

Tortorici points to IBM as a company that still follows this old-style BPM strategy. “They have a lot of tools with not a lot of integration between different process-oriented products. For example, IBM recommends its customers use FileNet for document-centric workflows and WebSphere Dynamic Process Edition for system-centric processes, and integrate them for broader needs. “As a services-based company, they have a vested interest in growing services—and product integration is one area of services growth,” he says.

While IBM represents the past, Oracle’s BPM strategy looks to the future with one unified platform that manages all types of processes. “Oracle BPM Suite 11g has been built to handle every process type with the same set of tools,” says Tortorici. Oracle’s unified process model delivers a tool set that works across both business and IT departments, and its unification with Oracle Fusion Middleware brings even more capabilities to the table. Moreover, Oracle BPM Suite gives customers a complete and unified foundation that enables them to grow as needed while giving them the ability to start with a simple process.

“Because we are not just integrated but unified, Oracle BPM Suite provides a lot of benefits for the customer—it delivers faster results, reduces complexity, lowers total costs, and minimizes necessary skill sets. Oracle BPM Suite enables you to concentrate on automating and optimizing your business processes rather than on managing the disparate process management infrastructure,” says Tortorici.
