5 Best Practices for Maximizing Social Networking Implementation Value
For years e-mail has unknowingly served as the de facto platform to conduct and manage processes within our workplaces. Though incredibly robust, it was never intended to directly handle collaborative context and lifecycle. Enter enterprise social networking, also known as social collaboration.

How can you approach this new communication medium to objectively add value to your workplace? Consider the following key factors.
  • Context is king. Facebook's success is based on an intense focus on a user's context, not the technical merits of the underlying platform. Enterprise social collaboration success requires firmly determined context in order for activities to support business success.

  • Examine business processes. When looking for pilot projects to start leveraging social collaboration, examine the key processes in which a line of business engages. Collaboration around contracts, product plans, marketing materials, or other core processes may be good candidates for social network tooling to provide objective improvements.

  • Friction is your adversary. Ensure that the barrier to collaboration is low and trust that participants will respect corporate conduct guidelines in their communications.

  • Business data. Collaboration is most effective when undertaken in the context of data that can be helpful for decision-making. Determine where it might be cost-effective to enrich the collaborative context with supporting data, and result in lower cycle times for knowledge workers’ process completion.

  • Lifecycle. Understand when and where an individual collaborative thread may end and if there is value in pushing resulting data forward into a system of record or into another process. Know when it makes sense to archive stale or past collaborative activities.
