Oracle Unveils Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database 11g Release 2

In January, Oracle launched Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database 11g Release 2, which incorporates significant performance and scalability enhancements for real-time online transaction processing (OLTP)—plus new functionality to support analytic applications with real-time in-memory data management.

Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database is a full-featured relational in-memory database. Designed to run in the application tier, it provides the rapid transaction response times and high throughput required by mission-critical applications.

The new release marks a major step forward for Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database in three major ways.
  • Building on Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database’s OLTP strengths, this release incorporates significant performance and scalability improvements for real-time online transactions processing applications.
  • Extending into business intelligence, this release introduces new functionality to support analytics applications with real-time in-memory data management.
  • Enabling other Oracle products to adopt in-memory database technology, Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database is shipping with Oracle Communications Billing and Revenue Management Server for significant improvement in OLTP performance and scalability. Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database is also a key component of the new Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine, designed to support speed-of-thought visualization for business intelligence.
"In-memory data management is a key enabling technology for real-time data analysis and decision-making,” says Donald Feinberg, vice president and distinguished analyst, Gartner. "Organizations need to put in place a strategy for taking advantage of in-memory technology for both OLTP and analytics workloads."

Key features of Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database include
  • Parallel replication between Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database instances, for increased performance and scalability of real-time OLTP applications
  • Parallel cache data synchronization with Oracle Database 11g
  • Enhanced data access interfaces for applications
  • Improved query processing and optimization to boost response time and overall throughput
  • New SQL aggregation and analytic functions to support analytic workloads
  • Improved compatibility with Oracle Database through support for native large object data type support
Maximize BI Performance
The latest release enables Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite to achieve up to 20 times faster response time for instant visualization. And up to 5 times more data can be stored in-memory with advanced columnar compression capabilities.

"We are very excited that the new release enhances Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database's OLTP capabilities and introduces support for BI and analytic applications, so many new applications can take advantage of real-time in-memory data management," says Marie-Anne Neimat, vice president, Development, Oracle.
