Oracle WebCenter Best Practices

Get best practices and deployment advice from Oracle expert John Brunswick in this column. Passionate about both business and technology, John focuses on maximizing IT's ability to streamline and optimize business.

Five Best Practices for Application Integration

Oracle WebCenter provides a broad range of capabilities, but a particular business requirement may necessitate integration with additional systems. The following considerations can help optimize the integration process.

  • Business drivers and requirements. Integrations can take a lot of effort, so ensure that business drivers and requirements are well-defined and agreed upon up front by project stakeholders.
  • Platform capabilities. Take time to fully understand the capabilities inherent to the Oracle WebCenter platform. Out-of-the-box integrations exist with Oracle and third-party systems. Additionally, capabilities in the Oracle WebCenter platform can reduce effort and facilitate integration, potentially enhancing the subsequent upgradability of your solution.
  • Enterprise architecture. Catalog various enterprise data, network, and services required to support integration, such as security infrastructure, service bus technology, and shared enterprise services. New services may be beneficial and/or required.
  • Balance cost, time, and scope. Compare various integration options and their impact on time, effort, resources, upgradability, ongoing management, and cost. Outcomes can be significantly affected by organization integration pattern standards and project goals.
  • Coordinate roadmap and process. Work with the Oracle WebCenter team to understand product roadmaps. This can help create optimal alignment of native platform capabilities with your organization’s business requirements. Additionally, Oracle has architecture development process methodologies that can assist your move to a new architecture.
