Public Sector User Group: New President Outlines Active Agenda
At the Alliance 2013 conference that took place earlier this year, members of the Public Sector User Group (PSUG) gathered to see detailed presentations about the latest Oracle products, including the new release of Oracle’s PeopleSoft 9.2. The PSUG also held its annual meeting, where it named Tammy Boyles as its new president for the coming year.
Boyles, who is also human resource management system manager for the City of Charlotte, North Carolina, sees new opportunities to expand the activities of PSUG and facilitate even closer ties with Oracle in the months ahead.
Q: What were the hot topics for people from the public sector at this year’s Alliance conference?
A: The new release of PeopleSoft 9.2 generated a lot of interest, particularly in the way Oracle will be providing maintenance and upgrades going forward. This is an area that really resonates with the public sector. [Oracle announced that PeopleSoft’s Update Manager feature will enable organizations to streamline maintenance, tailor changes to their specific needs, apply maintenance on their schedules, and take advantage of other features to minimize costs and disruptions associated with updates.]
In terms of new features, the mobile innovations are exciting. They give agencies many new opportunities for using smart phones and tablets in their operations.
Q: As the new president of the PSUG, what initiatives do you plan to launch?
A: Our overall goal will be to continue to forge a close relationship between Oracle and the user group. To do that, we’ll have three main goals for the coming year. First, we’ll be looking for new and expanded ways of engaging Oracle in more PSUG activities. Second, we’ll encourage more public sector organizations to participate in the users group. And third, we’ll be increasing communications between PSUG and Oracle’s product advisory group members so we can have greater influence on the new enhancements that will be coming to Oracle solutions.
Q: What’s the value for public sector users of joining the PSUG?
A: In addition to our collaboration with Oracle, the group provides access to members who can provide a wealth of practical information for users of PeopleSoft and other Oracle solutions. We do this in part through a listserv with people from government and education. These people use Oracle solutions every day in their work and can explain how to get the most out of Oracle solutions based on real-world experiences. We also host monthly human capital management and financials calls to discuss various hot topics. Anyone can participate in these calls.
