Industry Strategy: Managing College Costs and Improving Outcomes Take Center Stage

Colleges and universities are being pressed to deliver higher levels of student services in an environment where tuition costs and scholarship funding are being more closely scrutinized than ever before. These were some of the most-talked-about topics at Oracle’s Education Industry Strategy Council meeting held recently in Washington DC.

The event provided a forum for education leaders and Oracle executives to discuss the needs of higher education institutions and look to future trends in product designs and industry requirements. Speakers also included representatives from the White House and both houses of Congress.

The strategy council meeting included about 30 Oracle Education and Research customers from colleges and universities in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Analytics Gain Importance
As part of the discussions about costs and education quality, school administrators discussed the role analytics can play in helping organizations run more efficiently.

“Real-time analytics, rather than historical reporting, can help us address concerns about reducing operating costs and shaping outcomes,” says attendee Joel Hartman, vice provost and CIO at the University of Central Florida. “Real-time sources of information can help us intervene on behalf of students to head off academic troubles. It can also help us better understand how students learn so we can educate them more effectively.”

Hartman adds that the growing interest in analytics have helped drive areas of possible new capabilities in future software releases. “What we’d like to see is the ability to harvest information from a variety of sources, including online learning management systems, to get a sharper view of student performance and educational effectiveness,” he says.
