High-Performance Oracle’s Netra SPARC T4 Servers Designed for the Communications Industry

Oracle introduced a new generation of carrier-grade servers for the communications industry that provide market-leading performance and high availability to power 3G and 4G networks, new mobile devices, and expanded service offerings. With the addition of these new products, Oracle’s Netra portfolio continues to be the broadest portfolio of SPARC and X86 rack server and bladed carrier-grade systems being deployed globally in carrier networks.

Available in rack and blade models, Oracle’s Netra SPARC T4 servers are Network Equipment-Building System Level 3 certified for severe environmental conditions. They also address communications industry requirements for network-component longevity and support for AC and DC power supplies.

The servers are based on the new Oracle’s SPARC T4 processor and work with the Oracle Solaris operating system. Together they automatically detect whether workloads are single- or multithread heavy, and then dedicate the appropriate resources to maximize application performance. “This capability dramatically improves single-thread performance—up to five times that of the previous generation processors,” says Mark Butler, product management director for Oracle’s Netra systems.

High single-thread speeds are important for key application workloads in the communications network infrastructure, such as operational support systems and billing support systems. Fast performance also helps service providers address processing complexities introduced by the growing numbers of mobile devices and exploding volumes of subscriber data now being delivered over networks for everything from user authorizations to mobile banking transactions.

In recent evaluations Netra SPARC T4 servers delivered record-breaking performance in a number of closely watched industry benchmarks, including SPECjvm2008 and Oracle Communications ASAP tests.

A Choice of Models
Oracle offers the servers in three configurations.
  • Netra SPARC T4-1—a single-socket rack-mount model capable of performing up to 64 simultaneous execution threads and supporting up 256 gigabytes of memory. Netra SPARC T4-1 offers both 4- and 8-core processor options, and the chassis also accommodates hot-swappable components, such as high-efficiency AC or DC power supplies and disk drives.
  • Netra SPARC T4-1B— this model delivers the equivalent performance of the Netra SPARC T4-1 in a blade-server module.
  • Netra SPARC T4-2—a rack-mount server containing two 8-core SPARC T4 processors and the ability to process up to 128 simultaneous threads. It provides double the processing power, memory, storage and I/O slots of a Netra SPARC T4-1 rack server.
Integrated Capabilities
Netra SPARC T4 servers also offer built-in security and virtualization capabilities. Enhanced security features include automatic on-chip cryptographic acceleration that supports 16 industry standard security ciphers without performance penalties. Oracle VM Server for SPARC handles up to 128 virtual machines, and no-overhead Oracle Solaris Zones provides thousands of partitions on a single server for real-time scaling and workload consolidation.
