QA: Oracle WebCenter's Ken Peterka on Comprehensive New Capture and Imaging Offering

Oracle has converged two separate products, Oracle WebCenter Capture and Oracle WebCenter Distributed Capture to create a new solution, Oracle WebCenter Enterprise Capture—a key new element of Oracle WebCenter Imaging.

As Vice President of Software Development, Ken Peterka led the innovative development behind Oracle WebCenter Enterprise Capture. In the following interview, he details the design of the new product and how it enhances business processes.

Q. Please briefly explain what Oracle WebCenter Enterprise Capture does.
A. Oracle WebCenter Enterprise Capture streamlines the capture process for both paper and electronic documents. It is focused on process-oriented imaging applications and enterprise capture for content management. Key capabilities include

  • Scanning and importing (capturing) documents
  • Reviewing, editing, and indexing documents
  • Releasing documents so they can be further processed, checked into a content repository, or attached to business application records
Q. What drove the decision to create Oracle WebCenter Enterprise Capture?
A. We knew we wanted to converge Oracle WebCenter Capture and Oracle WebCenter Distributed Capture into a single offering. But it was also an opportunity to rewrite the product on Java Platform, Enterprise Edition. Now the solution runs on the same common architecture that Oracle uses across its offerings—including Oracle WebLogic Server. Besides facilitating easier integration, it means simplified administration, since Java developers can leverage skills they have already mastered.

Q. Oracle is committed to enhanced usability. How have you supported this goal with Oracle WebCenter Enterprise Capture?
A. We really listened to our customers. For example, they told us they could be more productive if scanning and indexing were combined into a single interface, so we made sure that happened. We also found that customers tend to roll out a single capture solution for all kinds of documents, so we also created a common interface for both digital and paper capture. Those are just two examples, but we incorporated as much customer input as possible.

Q. What about other new features to drive operational efficiencies?
A. There are too many cool new features to list everything. But for starters, there is automatic indexing of documents that have bar codes. We also support more use cases without requiring scripting. You can index documents captured at remote locations. And the solution now has multithreading capabilities, so you can keep working while other operations are being completed.

Q. What about globalization?
A. We used to have limited language support, but now we support localization with 26 different languages.
