New Release of Oracle Application Express Supports Mobile Platforms

The latest release of Oracle Application Express is now available for download on Oracle Technology Network. Oracle Application Express dramatically speeds the development of opportunistic, database-centric, HTML5 applications for desktop—and now, mobile—platforms.

A no-cost option of Oracle Database, Oracle Application Express 4.2 enables developers to build professional, scalable applications for Oracle Databases using only a Web browser.

The declarative development framework of Oracle Application Express utilizes wizards and property sheets to build and maintain applications. This information is stored in and referenced from a metadata repository, alleviating the need for compilation or code generation.

Mobile Platforms: Build Once, Deploy Many Times
The latest release enables developers to build Oracle Application Express applications just once to support multiple mobile platforms. The applications can automatically be rendered in the appropriate user interface when accessed by various mobile platforms.

The latest release leverages jQuery Mobile so mobile themes can function on all major mobile platforms without modifications—including features such as page transitions and HTML5 item types. Other features include

  • HTML5 charts. Allows charts to be displayed on devices that don’t support Flash.
  • HTML5 item types. Allows developers to specify item types for number, e-mail, telephone, and URL, greatly enhancing the experience of users entering data on HTML5-aware mobile devices.

“One important goal for us this year is to support multiple platforms and devices, including Macs, iPads, and iPhones,” said Sayee Natarajan, director, Sales and Marketing Systems, Purdue Pharma. “Oracle Application Express 4.2 will allow us to develop an application once and deploy it to all these devices by incorporating responsive design in the templates, automatically scaling from the largest monitors to the iPad in landscape mode."

New Productivity Applications
The latest release also introduces a collection of new, out-of-the-box productivity applications to help organizations immediately start capitalizing on their database investment.

"These packaged applications enable companies to unlock and customize the solutions provided and speed the path to best practices," explains Mike Hichwa, vice president, software development, Oracle.
