Partners and Analysts Embrace Oracle's Groundbreaking Multitenant Architecture

Oracle Database 12c continues to wow analysts and partners as they endorse Oracle's new multitenant architecture.

"Finally, we have a true cloud database," writes Riyaj Shamsudeen in InfoWorld. "Database consolidation can be done much more effectively with pluggable databases than ever before."

Multitenancy Delivers True Database Consolidation
Database consolidation has been taking place for years. Many IT shops have already undertaken consolidation projects using virtualization or clustering. As they look for the next big gains in efficiency and agility, Oracle Multitenant provides the next big step in enabling a greater level of database consolidation density.

Database virtualization enables multiple databases to share the same physical servers, and clustering enables individual databases to share not just physical servers but also operating systems. As a result, clustered databases could deliver a level of performance and availability not possible with virtualization alone. However, while these advances deliver hardware savings, IT organizations still struggle with the cost and complexity of managing hundreds, even thousands, of separate databases.

"Oracle Multitenant directly addresses this challenge," explains Patrick Wheeler, senior director of product management, Oracle. "Oracle Multitenant is analogous to the virtualization of servers, except now we have essentially virtualized the database itself."

This means DBAs can manage many databases as one. For example, they can perform backups across an entire container of pluggable databases with the push of a button—without sacrificing the advantages of isolation and resource prioritization. The same principle applies to recovery, patches and updates, provisioning, cloning, and more.

Partners Endorse Oracle Multitenant
Oracle partners are quickly endorsing Oracle Database 12c’s new features and capabilities by adapting their own products and services for the new technology.

  • e-DBA, an official production partner for Oracle Database 12c, offers a database-as-a-service environment for rapid provisioning of test and development workloads that is underpinned by Oracle Multitenant.
  • The NetApp Solution for Oracle Database now includes enhancements for Oracle Database 12c.
  • Dell has updated SharePlex, its replication and data integration solution, to support Oracle Database 12c.

Analysts Views on Oracle Database 12c
"Oracle Multitenant will provide significant productivity and resource savings for Oracle customers considering database consolidation, on- or off-premises," concludes Ovum in a new report, “Oracle Database 12c Offers New Take on Multitenancy.
