Higher Education Leaders Explore Strategies for Sustainable Growth

The group of industry luminaries who gathered for the most recent Oracle Industry Strategy Council for higher education agreed that funding issues were among the biggest challenges facing their institutions, and discussed the latest strategies and technologies for meeting these challenges.

In addition, Oracle demonstrated how it supports operational transformations with Oracle Enterprise Performance Management software. The solution includes tools for enabling more-informed decision-making across institutions through analysis and transparency.

“US institutions are facing challenges resulting from funding shortages and the need to become more sustainable by using available resources to more effectively support their core missions,” says Selim Burduroğlu, principal solution architect for education and research industries, Oracle.

The recent gathering of higher education professionals included a panel discussion with Erin Gore, executive vice president for Wells Fargo education and nonprofit commercial banking and former chief financial officer at the University of California, Berkeley. Also on the panel was Diane Goddard, vice provost for administration and finance at Kansas University.

Gore described how the University of California, Berkeley, is implementing a new budget system that will help administrators align resources with the school’s strategic vision for operational excellence. Called CalPlanning, the new campuswide tool will aid officials in preparing, analyzing, and assessing the annual budget, while utilizing technology to automate and streamline the process.

Kansas University’s Goddard says budget and planning tools are becoming more critical for schools as resources become more scarce. This requires officials to analyze all funding sources more strategically, including tuition and state appropriations as well as endowments, grants, indirect research, and other funding across all units, she says.

Oracle's Industry Strategy Councils consist of a select group of forward-thinking leaders who provide input and feedback to Oracle on its mid- and long-term product strategies. The Oracle Strategy Council for higher education convenes twice a year, with the next meeting scheduled for June in Washington DC, where attendees will meet with leaders from the Obama administration and Congress.
