Q&A: Mughees Minhas on Driving Agility with Oracle’s Testing-as-a-Service Solution
Organizations regularly devote as much as 50 percent of quality assurance time on nontest-related activities. Meanwhile, dedicated testing hardware sits idle for most of its life. To address both these challenges, Oracle has launched the Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c testing-as-a-service (TaaS) solution.
To find out how Oracle’s TaaS solution can speed and simplify testing, we talked to Oracle Vice President Mughees Minhas, who is responsible for product strategy for Oracle Database manageability solutions as well as Oracle Enterprise Manager and Oracle Application Testing Suite.
Q. What business challenges does Oracle’s TaaS solution overcome?
A. Because testing can be time-consuming and expensive, organizations often forgo testing altogether. That means either they delay implementing new capabilities, patches, and so on, or they deploy them without testing.
With Oracle’s TaaS solution, which is a testing solution for private clouds, you can quickly and easily provision the test environment in the cloud, run the test, validate the application quality, and then deprovision the test environment to make room for others run their tests. This makes your business more agile and improves the quality of service for your critical applications. When you can test components quickly, you can respond to change much faster, whether you're implementing a new security patch or new functionality to meet changing market conditions.
Q. How does Oracle’s TaaS solution drive tester productivity?
A. It cuts the testing time in half by automating test lab creation and test execution from an intuitive self-service console. It also enables nonquality assurance professionals to initiate test runs, so quality assurance experts can focus their valuable time on more-strategic and critical activities.
Q. Besides making testers more productive, what are other benefits of Oracle’s TaaS solution?
A. The solution helps you reduce hardware costs—and maximize usage of the hardware you have. Instead of dedicated hardware for, say, each application, you can tap into—and reuse—a much larger cloud hardware resource pool.
And of course, this larger resource pool enables you to better mimic a production environment, which in turn supports more-realistic testing. In short, you can test more quickly and more accurately—all at lower cost.
Q. You've said Oracle’s TaaS solution is particularly valuable to Oracle applications customers. Why?
A. Our TaaS solution is optimized for Oracle applications. We have accelerators for Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle’s Siebel, PeopleSoft, and JD Edwards product lines that speed up test scripting and creation. And Oracle’s TaaS solution also integrates with diagnostics and tuning tools that are specifically designed for Oracle Database, Oracle WebLogic Server, and Oracle Applications. These tools don't just serve up raw testing data, they provide actionable recommendations on how to fix issues uncovered during testing. They tell you exactly where a problem is occurring and what you need to do about it.
