Deploy Oracle Database in Minutes with Oracle VM Templates

With Oracle VM Templates, midsize organizations can deploy Oracle Database in minutes. We asked Oracle expert Doan Nguyen, principal product director, Oracle VM, to explain how it's possible.

Q. What are Oracle VM Templates, and how do they work?
A. An Oracle VM Template is a virtual machine (or set of virtual machines) containing Oracle and other software. They deliver prebuilt, preinstalled, and preconfigured support for specific uses, including business applications, databases, and operating systems.

Currently, you can download Oracle VM Templates for many key Oracle products, including Oracle Linux, Oracle Solaris, Oracle Database, and many more.

Q. Why do Oracle VM Templates speed deployment?
A. By providing preconfigured software images of a complete software stack, these templates dramatically speed and simplify deployment. They ensure reliable and repeatable reuse of code. That means you don't have to repeat the same set of installation steps, which decreases the amount of work and complexity—and the risk of human error.

Q. What, specifically, is available for Oracle Database?
A. Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database provide a framework that fully automates the creation of a single instance, restart (single instance/high availability), or Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) configuration in an Oracle VM environment. In a matter of minutes, the versatile and powerful Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database can be cloned into any number of virtual machines which could be deployed as a single instance, restart (single instance/high availability) or Oracle RAC of any number of nodes.

Q. Can you give an example of how a midsize organization might benefit from using the templates?
A. Say you need to deliver a critical custom application as fast as possible. You have to develop, test, and deploy the application, a process that involves a database, web server, application server, and the custom application itself.

Within a virtualized environment, you need to manage hundreds of parameters, and you need to do so four times: for the development, testing, preproduction, and production environment. With Oracle VM Templates, you can define the environment one time and then reuse it all four times.

Q. How do Oracle VM Templates differ from VMware templates?
A. Oracle is the only vendor that provides templates ready for deployment as soon as they are downloaded. To use VMWare templates, you still have to manually install and patch the operating system, database, etc. We are different because we own not just the application layer but also the database and operating system layers. So we can do all the work behind the scenes, then deliver templates that are prebuilt, preconfigured, and pretested.

Q. Is there any third-party testing to validate the advantages of Oracle VM Templates?
A. We sent template links to the Evaluator Group for a side-by-side analysis, and they found that deploying Oracle RAC 11g Release 2 and Oracle E Business Suite 12.1.1 using Oracle VM Templates on Oracle VM 3.1.1 was magnitudes faster than on VMware vSphere 5.
