I'm excited about JavaOne this year. It's going to be different in a lot of ways, but we are doing our best to ensure that the Java.net presence for the community is just as good if not better then previous years. In years past Java.net has had a "community corner" booth in the JavaOne pavilion at Moscone. It was always a little bit of a weird fit, to have a community space plonked down in the middle (or the corner) of this big space mostly dedicated to marketing.
This time we'll be housed in the Mason Street tent, which will be a large comfortable space for people from all of the technology communities to hang out, pick up swag, watch the videocasts, and see some live events too, like the Java Posse on Tuesday night. The tent will be huge - taking up the entire city block between the Hilton and Nikko.
Community members will be able to come find me, our editor Kevin, and other members of the leadership and infrastructure team throughout the week. The larger space will be shared by JUGs, Java Champions, Oracle Aces, and the Architecture community, among others. We'll have some comfy couches, one kiosk to demo the new version of the site on, and we'll be right next to the coffee and beer, which I'm sure many members will approve of. This year we'll also be doing professionally produced videocasts - they will be hosted by our editor, Kevin Farnham, and feature interviews with a variety of leaders from the community. I hope you will find the time to come by, see the demo, and say hello to us if you're in town.

Meet Duchess at JavaOne

Regina Ten Bruggencate and several other Duchesses are joining JavaOne this year as Java User Group leaders, unconference presenters and TechCast interviewees.
Regina is a 12 year Java developer veteran. She is a very versatile Java consultant and has worked for a range of industries such as financial institutions, retail, government and transportation and she is now working for a large international airport in the Netherlands. She is also a board member of Duchess, a global network connecting women in Java technology and wants to grow the network with chapters in the U.S and around the world. With other Duchesses, she will be talking at the unconference about 'the roll of women in Java and IT" during JavaOne.
They will also be interviewed during the Oracle Technology Network TechCast Live interviews which will be produced live in the Mason Street Tent. To know their whereabouts during the conference, follow Regina on twitter or look out for #jduchess for updates during the event.

Brainstorm with experts! In addition to the power packed "official" sessions of JavaOne and Oracle Develop, there will be an unconference that runs in conjunction with the main conference from Monday-Thursday at the Parc 55 hotel.
What to expect at this unconference?
If you want to lead a session, you can register your session in the currently open three tracks at the unconference website write an abstract to get others interested in your session. One track out of four is open during the conference and you will be able register your session onsite.
You are expected to participate. Contribute to an open discussion, speak freely, share ideas and interact in an informal setting. You will discover how much you can learn from and share with your peers. You attend sessions as you like or (even better), lead an unconference session on a technical subject of your choice and get instant feedback and ideas from your peers.
What Are the Session Topics?
The unconference sessions can cover any subject related to Oracle technologies and IT industry. Community members are planning on discussing cloud computing, databases, women in technology, and much more. For example, at 10:00am on Monday, Regina ten Bruggencate, a 15-year veteran Java developer, experienced Java user group leader and founder of the European website jduchess.org, will invite participants to discuss "the roll of women in the Java community and IT".
Who can join?
All full conference registrants at JavaOne and Oracle Develop are welcome.

Visit the unconference website for the schedule and write the abstracts to learn more about the sessions.
See you in September!
Posted: August 20, 2010 commentsSomething for Architects, too, two
We've already mentioned that there is plenty for architects to do at JavaOne 2010, including the more than 50 sessions in the Enterprise Service Architectures and the Cloud track. But that's only a part of the story.
Since JavaOne and Oracle Develop registration is a two-fer, you'll have access to even more sessions and events that will appeal to your architectural interests. For instance, there are nearly 40 sessions in Oracle Develop's Service-Oriented Architecture track and more than 30 sessions in Develop's Application Grid and Oracle WebLogic track. So between the three tracks mentioned here you're looking at nearly 120 sessions covering topics relevant to software architects.
And if that's not enough to keep you busy - or if trying to keep up wears you out - you can hang out in the Mason Street Tent for a little R&R. You'll find refreshments, t-shirts, software, and other cool swag, along with plenty of opportunity to network with your peers and community luminaries. And don't forget the Architect Meet-up right there in the Tent, at 5:00pm on Tuesday, 9/21. It's open to all architects attending JavaOne, Oracle Develop, and Oracle OpenWorld.
The Mason Street Tent is located between the Hilton and Nikko hotels, occupying the entire block from Ellis to O'Farrell. We'll see you there.
Wear comfortable shoes.
-- Bob Rhubart
Posted: August 19, 2010 commentsJavaOne: Something for Architects, too
Good development starts with good architecture. If you're an architect or have an interest in architecture, JavaOne has plenty to keep you busy
For instance, the Enterprise Service Architectures and the Cloud track offers more than 50 sessions, covering applications, storage, security, and other critical considerations.
You'll also want to check out the Mason St. tent, between the Hilton and Nikko hotels, for cool swag, refreshments, and chance to network with your peers, including an Architect Meet-up on Tuesday, 9/21, at 5:00pm.
Check it out!

In just under 3 months, there will be a cosmic alignment of events in San Francisco - Oracle OpenWorld, JavaOne and Oracle Develop. But if you've landed on this blog, you already know this. The nexus of this alignment is going to be one giant tent! Yes, there will be great general sessions and your plates will be filled with more technology and product presentations that you could possibly digest, but where you will want to go to truly connect with fellow attendees of any of these events is the 'Mason Street Tent'. We know, not that flashy of a name, but hey - you'll never forget where it is!
So what does the tent have for you? Those of you familiar with the OTN Lounge at Oracle OpenWorld will find all of the cool stuff that you have before, + even more! For those of you JavaOne veterans, you'll find the Java.net community, the Duke's Choice Awards, JUGs and tight rope walking, elephants, cannon blasts... (ok, well, not those last 3). But - did we mention swag? OTN Cassandra has been mining her swag sources for the coolest stuff ever, and at the end of every day the Mason Street tent is where you'll want to be for your chance at cool prizes, and of course a cold brew!
Besides a space to meet up with fellow attendees, this is also the spot to view live video interviews, or meet with Oracle ACEs, ODTUG members or Java Champions. The tent will be open all day with beanbags and couches for relaxing, cool water to quench your thirst, and a guaranteed good time experiencing the non-scheduled facets of these 3 conferences.
We look forward to seeing you there - for the OTN team it will be our home away from home!

Java History Quiz - Get in the Mood
It's just under 15 weeks until JavaOne 2010 and our heads are swimming with all the cool things Oracle Technology Network is dreaming up to give away at the event i.e. t-shirts, pens, buttons etc. So much to choose from and so little time. The Oracle OpenWorld, JavaOne and Oracle Develop 2010 content catalog is live. You can peruse most of the almost 2,000 sessions available this year at OpenWorld, JavaOne and Oracle Develop, including session titles, abstracts, track info, and confirmed speakers.
You can find the latest on JDK 7, deep dives on the JVM, REST, JavaFX, JSF, Enterprise Java, Seam, OSGi, HTTP, Swing, GWT, Groovy, JRuby, Unit Testing, Metro, Lift, Comet, jclouds, Hudson, Scala, [insert technology here], etc.
To access the Content Catalog, just look under Tools on the right side of this page. You can tag content in the catalog so you—and others who do what you do, or think the way you think—can easily find this year's don't-miss sessions. Take a few minutes to look around, and start planning your most productive/informative/valuable JavaOne ever! Schedule Builder, where you can sign up for sessions, will be up in July.
Posted: June 2, 2010 commentsWelcome to JavaOne!

Welcome to this year's JavaOne conference! We are glad you dropped by. We want to keep you informed of all the happenings around JavaOne: all the events leading up to the conference and all the events during the conference week itself. We'll cover announcements, news, planning (but we won't make you go to any meetings), and snafus (nothing that makes us look too bad, of course). We'll even throw in a contest or two to make sure you are paying attention. We'll post a couple of times a week, and then more frequently as we get closer to September. There's a group of us, and we cover the Java beat, JUGs, Oracle Technology Network, Oracle Solaris, and lots more. What do you want to hear about? Let us know.
A group of us from the office went to see the movie Iron Man 2 (it just debuted in the United States) last week and it reminded us of Java, the Java community, and JavaOne. In all three cases, from many disparate (and sometimes seemingly incompatible) parts and people, something comes together that works, is cool, and helps make a better world. Right now, there are hundreds of little islands of planning, all busy answering questions for JavaOne: What sessions get selected? What goes in the Mason street tent (until a few weeks ago, Will there be a tent on Mason street?), What do the JUGS need? Which Oracle ACEs will be there? Can we do a surf theme at the OTN party? And, somehow, like an Iron Man suit, they all come together and work to make a great event. At least, we hope it will be great. That's for you to decide. Please don't be shy—give us your comments and suggestions. We'll be listening.
