Oracle Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards 2010

The Oracle Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards 2010 generated a record 200+ nominations across several categories including: Enterprise 2.0, Identity Management, Application Grid, Data Integration and Availability, SOA and BPM, and Fusion Middleware with Oracle Applications - 33 winning customers and their implementation partners, were selected from around the globe across all six categories. Winners were recognized at an Awards Ceremony held at Oracle OpenWorld 2010 in San Francisco, where senior Oracle executives were on hand to celebrate our customers and partners winning innovative solutions.

Amgen

Amgen is the leading human therapeutics company in the biotechnology industry. Amgen upgraded web hosting platform from WebLogic Server 8.1, including 70+ external facing websites, resulting in better performance, stability and flexibility. The shared platform means they can scale horizontally at any tier, maximizing utilization of WebLogic Server, and reducing costs.

Ascent Media

Ascent Media drives the global digital media supply chain with over 40 united facilities worldwide. Viia, Digital Asset Management (DAM), offered via SaaS built with WebLogic Server 11g and Glassfish to address scalability and performance, and multi-tenancy requirements. Solution delivers on high volume, large scalability, performance requirements - data under management 20 Petabytes, media processing transactions 9000/day, peak media processing IO – 220terabytes/day, metadata information under management – 25 million rows.

Avocent

Avocent, a division of Emerson Network Power, are building a next generation Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) with AppGrid and OFM, migrating from open source (JBoss) to deliver more reliable, scalable and integrated infrastructure. Built by 600+ developers, the new platform will support hundreds of thousands of end managed devices and be capable of processing millions of events per second.

CALWin

CALWin is the largest eligibility determination system in California, supporting 2.6+ million families. With the help of HP Enterprise Services, CALWin has implemented Tuxedo Multi-Processor (MP) domains and RAC on back-end; modernized front-end/integration layer migrating from IBM WebSphere to Oracle SOA running WebLogic Server and Oracle Service Bus using WebLogic Tuxedo Connector (WTC) to tie back-end and front-end together. Provides open, service-based architecture that scales vertically and horizontally to provide near-linear scalability. Processes an average of 247 million transactions/month, average response time <1 second.

Credit Suisse

Credit Suisse is a world-leading financial services company. Credit Suisse produced its Java Application Platform or JAP as a private cloud or platform-as-a-service on WebLogic Server (WLS), which contains 450 servers with more than 250 applications in production running on several thousand WLS instances. JAP has reduced infrastructure cost for Java applications by 30%, while at the same time improved quality and speed of delivery significantly.

Northern Trust

Northern Trust is a leading international financial services company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Northern Trust developed a shared hosting environment (private cloud) to support all J2EE applications based on WebLogic Server, with over 180 applications. Highly reliable platform supports large scalability requirements, and business growth while minimizing costs - 10-fold growth in # apps, minor staff increase (2-3 FTE), and continue to drive down relative capital infrastructure spend vs application development - down 15% over 10 year period.

OpenLink

OpenLink is a provider of cross-asset trading, risk management, and portfolio mgmt software solutions. The compute grid architecture is responsible for calculating and maintaining risk, credit and physical. Uniquely, developed a layer above Coherence APIs "QueryCache" to support continuous aggregations. Supports operations that may map to potentially millions of rows of real-time data delivered in second or sub-second response time.

Rakuten

Rakuten Ichiba is the largest online shopping mall in Japan. Supports 33,000 shops, 8.6 million unique user's, process 73 million transactions annually and 1000 purchase orders/minute at peak times. Deployed on 100 WebLogic Server domains, 900 instances, use Coherence to support high volume transaction data. Application Grid is providing a stable, scalable and high performance platform to support growing business, 29.4% increase in orders, year-on-year.

Verizon

Leader in fiber optics, Verizon offers phone, Internet, TV, wireless and service bundles to residential, business, government and wholesale clients. VSII (Verizon Services Integration Infrastructure) is built with an end-to-end Oracle footprint including SOA Suite, ADF, BI, underpinned by Application Grid 11g, for batch and real time integration needs. Reduced development time and costs, delivered enhanced performance on data loads, provides full visibility to business, reduced license costs by millions by leveraging standard shared infrastructure.

UBank

UBank is a division of National Australia Bank, one of Australia's largest banks. UBank is a new online distribution channel offering online savings products for 100k account holders, the solution is built on an end-to-end Oracle Platform including the operating system. The 12 month, 50-person project has deployed 70+ Oracle products. Reduced provisioning process from 2 weeks to 5 hours. UBank was the first app in multi-tenancy platform – phase 2 currently under design. Oracle Consulting Services was the implementation partner.


DATA INTEGRATION AND AVAILABILITY

Avea

Avea is the sole GSM 1800 mobile operator of Turkey with a Nation-wide customer base of 12 million, and offers services to 97% of Turkey's population with roaming agreements with 617 operators in 199 countries. Avea uses Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator integrated together to feed Oracle Exadata to achieve real-time data warehousing. Oracle Business Intelligence is used for reporting that supports campaign management. Faster than previous ETL tools - batch runs now take half the time. Intellica was the implementation partner.

Herbalife

Herbalife produces nutrition, weight-management and personal care products for more than 2 million independent Distributors in 73 countries. Herbalife uses Oracle SOA Suite and Oracle Data Integrator for all integrations between Oracle E-Business Suite and their multiple applications, resulting in faster development, lower TCO from manual coding and improved customer experience. Herbalife follows the Application Integration Architecture (AIA) methodology for all their SOA solution designs, which helped lowered TCO by embedding SOA best practices.

Balfour Beatty

Balfour Beatty is a world-class infrastructure services business that delivers services essential to the creation and care of infrastructure assets including investment, project design, financing and management, engineering and construction and facilities management services. Oracle WebCenter Suite provides Balfour Beatty an Enterprise 2.0 solution that improves the organization's ability to draw on local, regional and global expertise, strengthening their competitive advantage. The portal provides a rich set of Enterprise 2.0 tools – blogs, wikis, forums, tagging, status updates – that help to connect Balfour Beatty staff across geographic and operating company boundaries within a secure corporate environment.

Education Management Corporation

Education Management Corporation (EDMC) is among the largest providers of private, for-profit post-secondary education in North America, based on student enrollment and revenue, with 101 locations in 30 United States and Canada. Using Oracle's Enterprise 2.0, portal and content management technology platform, EDMC creates a virtual campus where students can access critical information related to their classes, campus or student account, connect with other students, faculty and administration and find resources to guide them through their student journey from application to graduation.

ING Bank Turkey

ING offers banking, investments, life insurance and retirement services to over 85 million private, corporate and institutional clients in more than 40 countries. ING Turkey deployed a standard and scalable, open platform using Oracle WebCenter Suite for managing critical content and have established a strategic platform for building new content-centric applications with the appropriate amount of control and security. The platform also provides ING Turkey a scalable, robust and powerful content repository with Enterprise 2.0 features such as forums, wikis, blogs, and personal and group spaces. MSU Yazilim was the implementation partner.

SunGard

SunGard provides software and processing solutions for financial services, higher education and the public sector. SunGard uses Oracle WebCenter Suite to provide partners with a single portal interface for opportunity management, quotes and orders. Leveraging assistance from Keste, SunGard is aggregating external customer facing portals into one common portal and integrating internal employee portals to bring together people, processes and information across organizational boundaries.

Texas A&M University System

Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) is comprised of 11 Universities, 7 State Agencies and a Health Science Center and educates nearly 115,000 students and employs almost 27,000 faculty and staff. TAMUS uses Oracle WebCenter Suite to provide a unified, modern Enterprise 2.0 portal for faculty and staff to manage more than $700 million in research activities across multiple institutions. Enterprise 2.0 services such as wikis, blogs, discussion forums, RSS feeds and activity streams are used to improve collaboration and allow for faster and more efficient communication. Keste and Red Samurai Consulting have helped TAMUS integrate research information to streamline the research management process and empower researchers with a more dynamic and flexible user interface.

United States Senate

The Sergeant at Arms, is the largest department in size of staff and budget in the U.S. Senate. It is responsible for all Senate computers and technology support services, recording, photographic services, printing, graphics services, and telecommunications services. With assistance from BIAS, the U.S. Senate is migrating from Oracle AS Portal 10g to Oracle WebCenter Suite 11g to allow for a single user interface with increased collaboration and content management.


IDENTITY MANAGEMENT

NetApp

NetApp creates storage systems and software that helps customers store, manage, protect, and retain data. NetApp leverages Identity Management to authenticate systems with Oracle Identity Federation, Oracle Access Manager, and Oracle Virtual Directory, as well as provision to SaaS hosted applications. The Identity Management platform and technology allowed NetApp to reduce ETA and helpdesk tickets related to application access.

Schneider National, Inc

Schneider National, Inc. is a premier provider of truckload, logistics and intermodal services. The integrated Identity Management solution has enabled centralized role based access controls with automated request and approvals. Oracle Identity Management has improved user productivity, business processes, and security. Schneider has doubled the number of systems without increasing their administrative staff. Pricewaterhouse Coopers was the implementation partner.

The State University of New York

The State University of New York has 64 colleges and universities that need to share access and information. Oracle Identity Management allows local campuses to manage access to a central system for their faculty and students. Oracle Identity Federation and Oracle Virtual Directory enables access to a central service, which avoids duplications of security/user information in multiple data stores.

Telenor

Telenor is the world's 6th largest mobile operator with 184 million mobile subscribers, offering communication services in 14 countries. Telenor deployed Oracle Identity Manager, Oracle Access Manager, and Oracle Identity Federation to automate 64 SOX applications, SSO, and connect to 3rd party external applications. The Oracle Identity Management platform provides a uniform, standard platform to roll out new applications, and has enhanced the end user experience and security. Skyworth TTG was the implementation partner.

Avon

Avon is a leading global beauty company and world's largest direct seller of products. Implemented Hyperion Financial Management for financial consolidations and reporting, Hyperion Planning to accurately budget, plan and forecast, and Essbase for analysis and reporting. Simplified monthly close and consolidation process, and delivers scalability across 100+ business units; 60+ input currencies; multiple reporting currencies. Ranzal was the implementation partner.

Crocs

Crocs, global leader in innovative casual footwear, known for its simple, comfortable boat shoe. Built enterprise application integration platform using Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g and Oracle Application Integration Architecture to connect JD Edwards to 4+ core systems (Epicor Retail POS, Manhattan Warehouse Management, Sterling EDI, Demandware Ecommerce). With the help of Wipro, the solution is now live in America’s and Asia, supporting 10,000+ sales orders/day, 6000+ Warehouse Shipment Releases/day, 4000+ Inventory transactions/day, 6000+ shipment transactions per day.

Motorola

Motorola offers technologies, products, and services for mobile communications worldwide. Business Intelligence Consulting Group helped Motorola implement Service Analytics, Financial Analytics, Order Management Analytics, Project Analytics, custom data warehouse and Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, to deliver centralized web-based reporting, and unified view of business without impacting business processes or transactional systems. The solution has delivered significant ROI, improved productivity, consolidated multiple reporting systems, and reduced report lead time from weeks to days/hours.

Premium Wine Brands - Pernod Ricard

Premium Wine Brands, the regional entity of Pernod Ricard, is the co-leader of the global wine and spirits industry. Assisted by implementation partner Rubicon Red, Premium Wine Brands has optimized their business processes, and integrated disparate systems using Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g and Oracle Application Integration Architecture across a number of projects (i) Product Lifecycle Management (JDE/BizCaps) (ii) B2B Integration with suppliers (iii) Warehouse Project (JDE/Paperless) (iv) Sales Automation mobility project with ADF Mobile. The solution was delivered very quickly, with 3 complex processed developed and deployed in 3 weeks, delivering performance, transparency, scalability and seamless real-time integration, reducing double handling, and improving data accuracy.

University of Adelaide

Established in 1874, the University of Adelaide is one of Australia's leading universities. The recently implemented enterprise-wide portal uses SOA for the orchestration layer – Oracle SOA Suite 11g, WebLogic Server 11g to integrate back-end systems PeopleSoft 7.6/9, Epicor (CRM), Blackboard (Learning Management), Voyager (Library System). Oracle Coherence is used to improve performance, particularly during peak processing. Groundhog Software assisted with the project which went live in February 2010 for 20,000+ students and staff streamlining access to hundreds of disparate systems. The SOA orchestration layer provides flexibility, and agility to support changing business process.

University of Virginia

Founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia is one of the leading Universities in the United States. EMS Consulting helped implement SOA Suite to extend E-Business Suite and deliver a composite, data-driven, web-service based application to automate a complex, manual Effort Reporting process. They selected a loosely coupled SOA approach vs heavy customization to speed development and avoid re-implementing costly customizations with future E-Business Suite upgrades. The new automated Effort Reporting process cuts the process timeline by 50% to 45 days (vs 90 days previously), largely by elimination of paper and workflow automation.


SOA, BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT AND GOVERNANCE

Amylin

Amylin is aggressively transitioning major on-premise enterprise systems to hosted, software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions using SOA. Assisted by implementation partner, The Carrera Agency, Amylin used SOA Suite 11g and Oracle Service Bus 11g to create an "integration-as-a-service" hub for rapidly building service-oriented, composite applications in support of key business processes. The solution enabled fluid, secure, well-governed information sharing and data synchronization between on-premise and off-premise systems.

FN Herstal

FN Herstal designs, manufactures, and distributes a full range of firearms and accessories for defense, law enforcement, hunting and marksmanship. FN Herstal business processes were difficult to analyze, spread around many people in the organization, and a large portion of logic was hardcoded in legacy systems and point to point integration with Baan, and E-Business Suite. Implementation partner, eProseed, helped implement Oracle BPM Suite 11g, SOA Suite 11g, and Application Integration Architecture to enable online real-time ordering of military fire arms and spare parts enabling faster time to process quotes and orders.

Freddie Mac

The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FHLMC), known as Freddie Mac, is modernizing their loan processing to provide visibility into the loan process, enable a real time process to handle loans, and establish a common development platform based on standards. By using SOA Suite 11g (BPEL, OSB, BAM), Coherence, and WebLogic Server they were able to realize shorter time to loan completion and revenue.

Ingersoll Rand

Ingersoll Rand faced several challenges in raising their productivity and efficiency to a global industry leadership level including a cumbersome legal entity structure, non-compliant statutory and tax filings, disparate processes by sector, and multiple systems for core financial processes. To solve these challenges they created a Common Financial Application Operational Framework using Oracle SOA Suite 11g and Oracle Application Integration Architecture. The new framework has reduced finance costs by 23% - saving $900K annually, improved Order-to-Cash and Procure-to-Pay – generating $1.5M annually, and improved compliance through standardized, centralized processes.

OnStar

OnStar is the benchmark for in-vehicle safety, security, communication and convenience services, with more than than 5.5 million current subscribers. With the help of implementation partner Wipro, OnStar used Oracle SOA Suite to replace a custom client/server solution that was very difficult to maintain and change. By adopting loosely coupled, modular, and reusable services, OnStar achieved a 40% reduction in application development effort vs. point-to-point integration, and an estimated 45% reduction in application maintenance cost.

Queensland Courts Services, Department of Justice and Attorney General

Queensland Courts Services, Department of Justice and Attorney General had been very paper based, with manual processes through different courts and jurisdictions. Implementation partners Intelligent Pathways and Leonardo Consulting helped Queensland Courts Services adopt Oracle BPM Suite 11g and Oracle SOA Suite 11g as the foundation for a new Admissions process independent of court type, enabling process automation, flexibility and visualization integrating four disparate external systems.

Sempra Energy

Sempra Energy is a Fortune 500 energy services company based in San Diego, California. Sempra needed new middleware capabilities to facilitate real time process integration, and interface development for their Smart Meter and OpEx technology refresh. Using Oracle BPEL Process Manager 11g and Oracle Service Bus they have implemented a shared integration middleware infrastructure to consolidate logic and operations providing greater flexibility, and visibility and reducing total cost of integration - reduced development time through the use of shared components, has reduced average integration cost by 20%, reduced integration lifecycle maintenance and change costs by 10%, and improved process integration success rate from 99.9% to 99.99%.
