• Oracle is increasing its investment in the Oracle Solaris operating system and is preparing for the planned availability of Oracle Solaris 11 in calendar year 2011.
• The key focus areas for Oracle Solaris 11 will be availability, scalability and performance, efficiency, and security. Plans for Oracle Solaris 11 include greatly simplifying the most common software maintenance tasks to reduce unplanned downtime, scaling to support new hardware designs, and virtualization and security enhancements.

• Oracle Solaris is the #1 enterprise operating system, providing mission-critical availability, security and performance on both SPARC and x86 systems.
• Oracle Solaris 10 8/11 provides enhancements to Oracle Solaris ZFS and Oracle Solaris Install technologies, advanced support for new SPARC and x86 systems and performance gains for Oracle Database start up and ZFS sequential read/write workloads.
• Oracle Solaris is developed, tested and supported as an integrated component of Oracle's "applications-to-disk" technology stack, which includes continuous major platform testing, in addition to the Oracle Certification Environment, representing over 50,000 test use cases for every Oracle Solaris patch and platform released.
• The Oracle Solaris 10 8/11 update includes new features, fixes and hardware support in an easy-to-install manner and preserves guaranteed binary compatibility with over 11,000 third-party products and customer developed applications.

• New availability features greatly reduce planned downtime by up to 50%, virtually eliminating traditional patching and maintenance-related reboots and vastly improving system boot time to tens of seconds.
• Oracle Solaris 11 Express adds network virtualization and resource management to the complete, built-in virtualization capabilities of Oracle Solaris, providing the highest performance virtualization environment with the lowest overhead.
• Oracle Solaris 11 Express will also power the Oracle Exadata X2-2 and X2-8 Database Machines, as well as the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud machine.
