Sun Storage 6780 Array Delivers 1.6x Better Price/Performance than IBM

Oracle's Sun Storage 6780 array demonstrates competitive value with 1.6x better price/performance than a similarly configured IBM DS5300 disk system using the SPC-2 benchmark. Additionally, this benchmark result shows 4x better data rate performance and 1.7x better price/performance than the previous generation of modular storage arrays.
The SPC Benchmark-2 (SPC-2) is a series of related benchmark performance tests that simulate the sequential component of demands placed upon on-line, non-volatile storage in server-class computer systems. SPC-2 provides measurements in support of real-world environments characterized by:
Large numbers of concurrent sequential transfers
Demanding data rate requirements, including requirements for real time processing
Diverse application techniques for sequential processing
Substantial storage capacity requirements
Data persistence requirements to ensure preservation of data without corruption or loss
The SPC-2 benchmark results below show both the competitive advantage and generational improvement of the Sun Storage 6780 array configured using 8Gb fibre channel (FC) host interfaces using RAID 5 and RAID 6 data-protection schemes.
The Sun Storage 6780 array delivered 58% better SPC-2 price/performance than the IBM DS5300 on the SPC-2 benchmark in both RAID 5 and RAID 6 configurations.
The Sun Storage 6780 array delivered nearly identical performance for both RAID5 and RAID 6 configurations, showing only 1.6% less performance using double-parity data protection (RAID 6) vs. single parity (RAID 5.)
The Sun Storage 6780 delivered the best price/performance of any top ten SPC-2 performers. All systems that performed better had at least 6x higher tested storage configuration (TSC) prices.
The Sun Storage 6780 array delivered four times more SPC-2 MB/sec than the previous generation of Oracle's StorageTek 6540 array.
The Sun Storage 6780 array provides 1.7x better SPC-2 price/performance than the previous-generation StorageTek 6540 array.
