Oracle Communications ASAP Enables Service Activation of Over 150 Million Subscribers on Newest Netra SPARC T4-2 Server
(As of Thursday, 12 January 2012)
Oracle's new Netra SPARC T4-2 server delivered outstanding results on Oracle Communications ASAP. The Netra SPARC T4-2 server, running Oracle Solaris 10 with Oracle Solaris Containers, Oracle Database 11g Release 2, Oracle WebLogic Server 11g, and Oracle Communications ASAP, handled a record number of orders and showed an 86% performance improvement over Oracle's SPARC T3-based solution.
Oracle Communications ASAP is used by some of the world's largest communications service providers to activate a variety of services, including data, video, voice, and content services across mobile, fixed, and satellite networks. Typical activities performed include activating new subscribers and services, moving/adding/changing/deleting services of existing subscribers, and deleting existing subscribers and services.
Using a typical mobile model, the benchmark simulates the activation of a GSM subscriber and measures the number of independent atomic network actions per second. Based on Oracle Communications' deployment experiences across a number of mobile operators, a typical mobile operator with approximately 150 million subscribers requires an activation system that is capable of achieving approximately 1,800 independent atomic network actions per second.

A single Netra SPARC T4-2 server utilizing Oracle Solaris Container to host the ASAP application and the global Zone (Solaris Zones are a component of the Oracle Solaris Container environment) to host the Oracle Database was able to achieve an 86% performance improvement over an Oracle SPARC T3-1 server hosting the ASAP application and a SPARC T3-2 server hosting the Database tier.
With a typical mobile GSM order containing on average 7 independent atomic network actions, the results of Oracle Communications ASAP on the Netra SPARC T4-2 server achieved over 750,000 mobile orders per hour with 7 NEPs.
With the 14 NEP configuration and using Oracle Solaris Containers to consolidate the ASAP and Database tier on a single physical server, Oracle Communications ASAP is able to comfortably support approximately 150 million mobile subscribers on a Netra SPARC T4-2 server while operating at less than 46% server utilization.
