SPARC T5-2 Server Achieves World Record Two-Socket Results for SPECjbb2013

BENCHMARK SUMMARY

Oracle’s SPARC T5-2 server, using Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle Java Development Kit (JDK), delivered a new two-socket server world record result of 75,658 SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM max-jOPS and 23,334 SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM critical-jOPS on the SPECjbb2013 benchmark, Multi-JVM metric.

These results beat both HP’s four-socket DL560p Gen8 server running Intel Xeon E7-4650 processors and HP’s two-socket ML350p Gen8 server running Intel Xeon E5-2690 processors.

BENCHMARK DESCRIPTION

The SPECjbb2013 benchmark has been developed from the ground up to measure performance based on the latest Java application features. It is relevant to all audiences who are interested in Java server performance, including Java Virtual Machine (JVM) vendors, hardware developers, Java application developers, researchers and members of the academic community.

SPECjbb2013 replaces SPECjbb2005 and includes the following new features:

  • A usage model based on a world-wide supermarket company with an IT infrastructure that handles a mix of point-of-sale requests, online purchases and data-mining operations.
  • Both a pure throughput metric and a metric that measures critical throughput under service-level agreements (SLAs) specifying response times ranging from 10ms to 500ms.
  • Support for multiple run configurations, enabling users to analyze and overcome bottlenecks at multiple layers of the system stack, including hardware, OS, JVM and application layers.
  • Exercising new Java 7 features and other important performance elements, including the latest data formats (XML), communication using compression, and messaging with security.
  • Support for virtualization and cloud environments.

The SPARC T5-2 server with Oracle Solaris 11.1 and Oracle JDK 7 update 17 is 3.2 times faster per chip than the four-chip HP ProLiant DL560p Gen8 SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM max-jOPS results and 4 times faster per chip than the HP ProLiant DL 560p Gen8 SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM critical-jOPS results running Oracle JDK 7 update 15.

The SPARC T5-2 server with Oracle Solaris 11.1 and Oracle JDK 7 update 17 is 1.9 times faster on both SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM max-jOPS and SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM critical-jOPS results on the HP ProLiant ML350p Gen 8 running Windows 2008 R2.

The combination of Oracle Solaris 11.1 and Oracle JDK 7 update 17 on the SPARC T5-2 server delivered a result of 75,658 SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM max-jOPS and 23,334 SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM critical-jOPS on the SPECjbb2013 benchmark.

The SPARC T5-2 server with Oracle Solaris 11.1 and Oracle JDK 7 update 17 is 2.2 times faster on SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM max-jOPS results and 2.3 times faster on SPECjbb2013-MultiJVM critical-jOPS results on the previous generation SPARC T4 also running Oracle Solaris 11.
