Oracle Beats NetApp with Better Throughput, Better Response Times, and Lower Cost

BENCHMARK SUMMARY

The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 (two-node) delivered 210,535 SPECsfs2008nfsv3 ops/sec, besting all two-node NetApp results to date. (1)

Also, the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 delivered 2x the throughput of the two-node NetApp FAS 3250, NetApp most recent SPECsfs2008 NFSv3 submission to date.

And the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 delivered an Overall Response Time (ORT) of 1.12 milliseconds on SPECsfs2008nfsv3. The NetApp FAS 3250 ORT of 1.76 milliseconds is 1.5X times slower than the ZFS Storage ZS3-2 ORT on SPECsfs2008 on NFSv3.

Finally, the NetApp FAS 3250's list price for its bill of materials as tested on SPECsfs2008 for NFSv3 is 2.9x times higher than the ZFS Storage ZS3-2. (2)

This combination of throughput, response time and low cost allows the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 to deliver better value.

BENCHMARK DESCRIPTION

SPECsfs2008 is the latest version of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation benchmark suite measuring file server throughput and response time, providing a standardized method for comparing performance across different vendor platforms. SPECsfs2008 results summarize the server's capabilities with respect to the number of operations that can be handled per second, as well as the overall latency of the operations. The suite is a follow-on to the SFS97_R1 benchmark, adding a CIFS workload, an updated NFSv3 workload, support for additional client platforms, and a new test harness and reporting/submission framework.

Note these results are only comparing using the NFSv3 workload.

BENCHMARK OUTCOME

The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 delivered 210,535 SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 ops/sec with an ORT of 1.12 milliseconds on the SPECsfs2008 NFS benchmark. (1)

This is a 56% generational improvement in SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 ops/sec performance and a 35% generational improvement in SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 ORT over Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage 7320 SPECsfs2008 NFS benchmark results.

The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 (two-node) delivered more SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 ops/sec than any other two-node (or single node) result published by NetApp to date.

The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 delivered 2x more throughput than the two-node NetApp FAS3250 on the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark. Additionally the two-node FAS3250 ORT is 1.5x slower than the ORT of the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 on the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark.

The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 delivered 10% higher throughput and faster ORT than the two-node NetApp FAS6240 on the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark.

The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 delivered 1.8X higher throughput than the 14-node Isilon S200 on the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark. Additionally the 14-node S200 ORT is 2.8x slower than the ORT of the two-node Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 on the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark. And, the 14-node Isilon S200 list price for its bill of materials as tested on SPECsfs2008 for NFSv3 is 2.8x higher than the list price of the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 bill of materials as tested. Finally, the NetApp FAS3250 list price for its bill of materials as tested on SPECsfs2008 for NFSv3 is 2.9x higher than the list price of the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 bill of materials as tested.
