Oracle Outperforms NetApp in Midrange Systems on SPECsfs2008 NFS Benchmark, Costs Less Than 1/5 the Price

BENCHMARK SUMMARY

Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage 7320 appliance delivered 32% more throughput than the NetApp FAS 3270 array using the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark. Additionally, this benchmark highlights significantly better response times, with the Sun ZFS Storage 7320 having 9% lower overall response time (ORT) and 42% lower response time at maximum-recorded throughput than the FAS3270. Finally, this demonstrates the significantly better competitive value of the Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance with a tested storage configuration requiring less than half the rack space, half the number of hard disk drives and costing less than 1/5th the list price of the NetApp FAS3270 test storage configuration.

BENCHMARK DESCRIPTION

SPECsfs2008 is the latest version of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation benchmark suite measuring file server throughput and response time, providing a standardized method for comparing performance across different vendor platforms. SPECsfs2008 results summarize the server's capabilities with respect to the number of operations that can be handled per second, as well as the overall latency of the operations. The suite is a follow-on to the SFS97_R1 benchmark, adding a CIFS workload, an updated NFSv3 workload, support for additional client platforms, and a new test harness and reporting/submission framework.

Note these results are only comparing using the NFSv3 workload.

BENCHMARK OUTCOME

The Sun ZFS Storage 7320 appliance delivered outstanding performance on the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark, beating results published on NetApp's fastest midrange platform, the NetApp FAS3270.

  • The Sun ZFS Storage 7320 appliance delivered 134,140 SPEC SFS2008_nfs ops/sec with an Overall Response Time (ORT) of 1.51 milliseconds on the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark. (1)
  • The Sun ZFS Storage 7320 appliance has 32% higher throughput and 9% better ORT than the NetApp FAS3270 on the SPECsfs2008_nfs.v3 benchmark. (2)
  • The Sun ZFS Storage 7320 appliance recorded a response time of 2.5 milliseconds at 134,140 SPEC SFS2008_nfs ops/sec while the NetApp FAS3270 recorded a response time of 4.3 milliseconds at 101,183 SPEC SFS2008_nfs ops/sec which is 1.7x slower than Oracle.
  • As benchmarked, the Sun ZFS Storage 7320 appliance required less than half the rack space of the NetApp FAS3270A. (3)
  • As benchmarked, the Sun ZFS Storage 7320 appliance used 136 300GB HDDs to achieve its results. The NetApp FAS 3270 used over 2.6x more HDDs (360 450GB HDDs) to achieve its results.
  • As benchmarked, FAS3270 system under test has a list price that is over 5x greater than the Sun ZFS Storage 7320 appliance. (3)
