Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage Appliance Beats IBM on SPC-2 Benchmark Performance Results

Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance outperformed all published IBM SPC-2 MBPS™ results to date on the SPC-2 benchmark. The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance delivered 10,703.69 SPC-2 MBPS™ and a top 10 SPC-2 price-performance of $35.24. (1) This is a 10% advantage in throughput and a 7.7x advantage in price-performance over IBM's highest performance results on the IBM DS8800. Additionally, this benchmark demonstrates the significantly better efficiency and competitive value of the Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance with a tested storage configuration using half the number of hard disk drives as IBM's best published performance result on the IBM DS8800.

The SPC benchmark-2 (SPC-2) is a series of related benchmark performance tests that simulate the sequential component of demands placed upon on-line, non-volatile storage in server-class computer systems. SPC-2 provides measurements in support of real-world environments characterized by:

• Large numbers of concurrent sequential transfers
• Demanding data-rate requirements, including requirements for real-time processing
• Diverse application techniques for sequential processing
• Substantial storage capacity requirements
• Data persistence requirements to ensure preservation of data without corruption or loss

Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance delivered the second best performance result overall on the SPC-2 benchmark, beating results published on IBM's flagship disk enterprise storage product, the IBM System Storage ® DS8800.

• The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance delivered 10,703.69 SPC-2 MBPS™ and a SPC-2 price- performance of $35.24 on the SPC-2 benchmark. (1)
• The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance has 10% higher overall throughput and over 7.7X better price-performance than the IBM DS8800 on the SPC-2 benchmark. (2)
• As benchmarked, the Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance used 384 300GB HDDs to achieve its results. The IBM DS8800 used twice as many HDDs (784 146GB HDDs) to achieve its results.
• The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance has 43% higher overall throughput and over 4.3X better price-performance than the IBM XIV on the SPC-2 benchmark. (3)
• The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance has 243% higher overall throughput and over 2X better price-performance than the IBM Storwise V7000 on the SPC-2 benchmark. (4)
• The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance SPC-2 price-performance of $35.24 is a top 10 price- performance result. (1)
