Sun Fire X4270 Server Posts Best Two-Processor Windows Result on Two-Tier SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark

Oracle’s Sun Fire X4270 server running Oracle Solaris 10 and Oracle Database 10g delivered the highest two-processor, Windows-based result on the two-tier SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark with the new SAP enhancement package 4 for the SAP ERP 6.0 application (Unicode), an industry-standard measure of ERP performance. This score surpasses competing results and confirms the Sun Fire X4270 server (2 processors, 8 cores, 16 threads) as the leading two-processor Windows server on the two-tier SAP SD benchmark.

The SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark is a two-tier ERP business test that represents full business workloads of order processing and invoice processing, while demonstrating the ability to run both application and database software on a single system. The SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark represents the critical tasks performed in real-world ERP business environments.

The latest SAP enhancement package 4 for the SAP ERP 6.0 application (Unicode) enables seamless multilingual support, and brings extra overhead related to processing of larger character strings associated with Unicode encoding. Unicode is a computing standard that allows for the representation and manipulation of text expressed in most of the world's writing systems.

• The Sun Fire X4270 server, equipped with two Intel Xeon X5570 CPUs using SAP enhancement package 4 for the SAP ERP 6.0 application (Unicode), posted the best two-processor result using the Windows Server 2008 Operating System (OS) on two-tier SAP SD benchmark, supporting 3,416 benchmark users.
• This benchmark proves that the Sun Fire X4270 server, running Microsoft SQL server database on top of Windows Server 2008 OS, is well-suited to act as a robust entry-level ERP server, providing supreme levels of compute density per RU.
• This result highlights the optimal performance of Unicode-based SAP ERP applications on Oracle’s Sun Fire servers. Unicode enables seamless multilingual support when running various SAP applications and requires a different version of the software. • The Sun Fire X4270 server surpassed the best two socket Windows-based result of 3,415 SAP SD users posted by two processor (8 cores/16 threads) HP ProLiant BL460c G6 blade system equipped with with identical CPUs.
• In 2U of physical space, the Sun Fire X4270 server can support 45% more SAP SD users per RU than the competing HP ProLiant DL385 G6 system.
