Farmers Get Smart with New Java-Enabled Monitoring and Control System

For thousands of years, growers have walked their fields, manually checking water levels in the soil. Too little water or too much can damage crop health and decrease yield and quality. But now, thanks to ClimateMinder, a wireless monitoring and control system developed in Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE), all that’s needed to monitor fields is a smartphone. The ClimateMinder system uses Java mobile network technology to transmit key data from sensors in the field directly to mobile phones, laptops, and other devices.

ClimateMinder CEO Bulut Ersavas used Java JSPs and servlets to develop the system’s Web application and communication engine while at Kodalfa, a Turkish company that was named one of the country’s top seven startups in 2008. When asked why he chose Java, Ersavas said that he had worked with Java for more than a decade and was impressed by its reliability, robustness, and scalability.

The system uses thousands of remote field stations and receives more than 20 sensor readings per station every fifteen minutes. Given the amount of information, Ersavas needed a powerful, flexible, scalable environment capable of processing millions of data points quickly and reliably so that farmers could act on real-time information about their crops. No other platform was capable of providing the same level of performance, he said. What’s more, Ersavas was confident that, as his market and customer base expanded, Java would continue to provide the scalability necessary to meet growing demand.
