LodgON and Java

![]() Java Helps LodgON Create Private Social Networks From its inception, LodgON has focused on creating communities that provide customers with all the benefits of social networking, but within private communities in their companies or organizations. With the help of Java, LodgON delivers products and services across a variety of channels, including Web, mobile, broadband, and even in-vehicle systems, that enable customers to get the most out of their social media presence. Applying the concepts of social networks, LodgON uses Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 (Java EE 6), Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE), and JavaFX 2.0 in its application development. Johan Vos, LodgON’s chief technical officer, said that using JavaFX for both front-end and back-end development was critical to enabling the volume of interactions that occur between users. For example, JavaFX in combination with the Jersey REST implementation in the GlassFish server back-end allowed for a high number of concurrent requests. Vos points out that the primary advantage of JavaFX for developers is the ability to use familiar Java APIs in the JavaFX code, which dramatically reduces development time. Most of LodgON’s projects are associated with users and content. From a technical standpoint, they require the persistent storage, scalability, transaction support, and other technologies offered by Java EE 6 application servers. According to Vos, the Java EE 6 specification makes it much easier to create, implement, and use domain-specific tools. LodgON’s DaliCore code, which is built on top of Java EE and is a logical extension of the Java EE specification, provides domain-specific specifications for social networking and user-generated content. In addition to Java’s ease of use, rich visualization capabilities, and fast development time, Vos said he also appreciated the support of the Java community and its ecosystem of industry experts, sponsors, end-users, developers, vendors, and consultants. |
