Oracle VM Server for x86

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Oracle VM is free, next generation, scalable server virtualization software that supports Oracle and non-Oracle applications. Oracle VM provides an easy-to-use graphical interface for creating and managing virtual server pools running on x86 and x86-64-based systems across an enterprise; both Linux and Windows guests are supported. Part of Oracle VM includes the Xen hypervisor, and Oracle's engineering team contributes heavily to feature development of Xen mainline software—Learn More.

Security Certification
Oracle Linux Version 5 Update 1 has been certified by the German Common Criteria scheme as conformant to EAL4+ and the Controlled Access Protection Profile (CAPP), Role Based Access Control (RBAC), and Labeled Security Protection Profile (LSPP). The evaluation also covers Oracle Linux 5 Update 1 executed in a guest domain of Oracle VM server, including the use of para-virtualized drivers, demonstrating an EAL4+ certified environment.—Learn More.

* Paravirtualization support for RHEL 3.x and Windows 2008/2003/7/Vista/XP are paravirtualized device drivers only.

Oracle Solaris 10 support begins with Solaris 10 10/09. The Solaris 10 or Solaris 11 ExpressOS runs as a hardware virtual machine (HVM) which requires HVM support (Intel VT or AMD-V) on the underlying hardware platform. By default, Solaris 10 OS or Solaris 11 Express already has the required paravirtualized (PV) drivers installed as part of the OS.

Please refer to Oracle VM Server for x86 release note for guest OS support details.

CONTROL/MANAGEMENT FEATURES
Centralized Control of Servers and VMs Pools Oracle VM Manager provides a single point of control for the allocation of virtual machines to physical servers. Administrators can perform maintenance and provisioning tasks, set policies, and collect data from a remote or local node via a web interface. An integrated Oracle Database keeps track of all the information about your configuration.
HA Clustered Oracle VM Manager Using Oracle Clusterware in your setup, if the server running Oracle VM Manager and the underlying database had to fail, they would be automatically restarted on a different server.
Oracle VM Management Pack Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 5 introduces the Oracle VM Management Pack, which provides a comprehensive management solution for managing both the virtual machines and the operating systems and software running inside the virtual machines from a single product. The Oracle VM Management Pack provides integrated in-depth health and performance monitoring, configuration management, and lifecycle automation for both virtual- and physical infrastructure for maximum operational efficiency.
GENERAL FEATURES
Secure Live Migration Dynamically reallocate running virtual machines using SSL encrypted secure live migration. Oracle VM is the first commercially available virtualization product to offer secure migration out of the box. No need to purchase special hardware or deploy special secure networks.
High Availability Oracle VM uses robust clustering techniques to assure minimal downtime. Oracle VM uses network and storage heartbeats to determine node status and automatically restart or migrate VMs on physical server or network failures. Server pool load balancing algorithms assure the best allocation of resources to each VM. Server pool master auto-failover feature eliminate any single point of failure for virtualization management.
Oracle VM supports High Availability on all supported storage methods, including iSCSI, SAN, NAS, etc.
Distributed Lock Management An essential part of VMs failures detection and recovery, Distributed Lock Management guarantees that no duplicates VMs are created due to erroneous VM status reporting.
Pool Load Balancing Optimize allocation for VM to servers based on memory requirements and node availability. Oracle VM performs automated load balancing at each virtual machine power on.
Shared Storage The server pools can be configured using shared storage on NFS, OCFS2 on SAN, or OCFS2 on iSCSI.
Utility Servers It is possible to configure the server pool to have a dedicated server for VMs backup and restore.
Leading Performance Low-overhead architecture with the Xen hypervisor provides scalable performance under increasing workloads to meet the most aggressive performance requirements.
Latest Hardware Support Leverage the new hardware features from Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron processors for higher performance and more efficient power management.
Rapid VM Provisioning and Cloning Sparse file support in OCFS2 enables significantly faster virtual machine provisioning and cloning; allow users more control over data allocation, improving performance and storage efficiency.
ADMINISTRATION/DEVELOPMENT
Physical-to-Virtual / Virtual-to-Virtual Machine Conversion Quickly convert existing Linux or Windows physical servers or VMDK or VHD virtual machines to Oracle VM virtual machines to reduce license expenses.
