Turning Information into Power Report: Moving Toward the Smart Grid

The latest stimulus package will pump more than $50 billion into energy programs that will create new jobs, promote use of renewable resources, and modernize the electric grid. But is America ready for the smart grid? Oracle launched the Turning Information into Power study to examine:

• The U.S. public’s energy consumption habits, perception of utilities’ ability to provide useful information, and demand for new technologies
• Utilities’ opinions on and preparation for the emergence of renewable energy and the move to the smart grid

Key Findings

• Americans are concerned about energy costs and show interest in new energy options.
  • 94% are concerned with the energy costs of their primary residence.

• However, Americans’ interest is not yet translating to action.
  • Only 6% of respondents have installed renewable energy sources in the last 12 months.

• Utilities believe the smart grid is critical to meeting impending energy needs and are taking first steps.
  • 91% of utility managers believe it is critical that the U.S. adopts smart grid technologies.
