The objective of personalized medicine is to tailor treatment according to the molecular profile of each patient. It puts the concentration of preventive and therapeutic treatments on those who will most likely benefit, sparing expense and side effects for those who will not.
One of the major challenges in modern, molecular-based disease research is patient genetic variability, which affects both the efficacy and safety of the resulting therapeutic treatments. This challenge is overcome with individual patient omics profiles generated by a growing number of high-throughput molecular platforms.
Today, personalized medicine is closer to reality than ever before through targeted treatment, however, the substantial increase in data correspondingly requires scalable systems to continue to effectively manage the data and to remain current with advancing technology.
