Pieter Bensch
Pieter Bensch
Vice President and Managing Director, Oracle South Africa

Pieter Bench is Vice President and Managing Director responsible for all Oracle’s growth, operations and profitability in South Africa. In this role Pieter provides leadership and coordination for all lines of business in Oracle South Africa.

Since joining Oracle in 1998, Pieter held various roles at Oracle including Vice President for Oracle University across Europe, MiddleEast and Africa based out of the United Kingdom and responsible for growth and profitability of a very dynamic education business across 60 countries where Oracle has a direct presence and classroom training facilities. Most recently the role of Vice President for Oracle Support Services in Middle East and Africa which included Oracle Customer management group and Support Sales groups.

Pieter’s goal for Oracle South Africa includes accelerated transformation of the local subsidiary, improving customer satisfaction and ensuring that the Oracle Economy in South Africa has the required skills to ensure successful deployment of Oracle’s technology.

Another key focus is to ensure that we embrace Oracle #1 position in many industries globally that has enabled strategic customers around the world to become market leaders in their respective areas of business.

As a South African, Pieter enjoys the great outdoors. Wildlife and Scuba photography is high on his recreational activity list. HE is also a keen road and mountain bike cyclist and competes in various cycle challenges yearly including the 94.7 and Cape Argus.


Andrew Sutherland
DR. Andrew Sutherland
Senior Vice President,
EMEA Technology Oracle Europe, Middel East & Africa

Andrew Sutherland is Senior Vice President of Technology for Oracle Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA). He is responsible for growing Oracle’s market share across the region.

In this role he develops business strategies and manages competence in Oracle’s technology offerings across the region. He is also responsible for the interaction with Oracle’s product development teams.

Dr Sutherland has over 30 years’ experience in emerging technologies and their application to business problems. In particular, his expertise is in the design of solutions incorporating mobile and Internet technology. He has managed major projects in emerging technologies in the areas of Healthcare, Security Services, office automation and logistics. He joined Oracle in 1995.

He is the holder of a BSc, PhD and MBA and is a Chartered Engineer.


Asher Bohbot

Chief Executive Officer, EOH Mthombo (PTY) Ltd

Asher Bohbot moved to South Africa in 1980 where he joined AECI as a senior engineer. In 1981 he joined Laminate Industries (later to be part of the PG Group) as an industrial engineering manager. In 1990 he was appointed as a logistics director where he was subsequently promoted to the position of general manager of this entity.

In 1993 he was appointed to the main board of PG Bison as Executive Director of Distribution with responsibility for 30 branches around the country. In 1995, he took responsibility for Group Logistics and IT at PG Bison. Throughout his career within the PG Group, Asher was exposed to general business leadership, business systems and supply chain logistics, leading four major system implementations. In 1998 Bohbot left the PG Group and started EOH, a business and technology solutions provider. His aim was to create lifelong partnerships by developing business and IT strategies, supplying and implementing solutions and managing enterprise-wide business systems and processes for medium to large clients. Fifteen years later, Asher and the EOH Group of Companies are doing just that and very successfully. With an annual turnover of R5.0 billion and staff complement of 6000. In 2012 EOH was voted by Financial Mail as the top 4 listed company on the JSE. Its consistent performance has seen EOH make its mark on the local landscape and is set to become a top business and technology solutions provider.


Sal Laher
Sal Laher
Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Divisional ExecutiveEskom SOC Limited

Sal Laher was appointed CIO and Divisional Executive of Eskom SOC Limited in April 2012. An executive and senior IT professional with over 30 years technical, management, and blue chip experience in the IT Industry. He has held various roles within the infrastructure management, software delivery, project integration, consultancy, and senior management arenas within Information Communications and Technology. He has worked in the following industries:

  • Central Government (Inland Revenue, Department of Trade and Industry, BBC, Lord Chancellors Department, and Eskom SOC Limited );
  • Aerospace (Rolls-Royce);
  • Consultancy (CSC, ICL, and EDS);
  • Retail (Checkers);
  • Financial Services (General Insurance at Capita Insurance; Life & Pensions at Capita Life & Pensions; and Retail Banking at Absa);
  • Utilities (Vertex), and,
  • Outsourcing (Capita and Vertex).

Sal began his IT career with the South African supermarket chain company Checkers. He then had a short stint with ICL South Africa before relocating to the UK, with CSC, where he was based at the Inland Revenue for 9 years.Sal subsequently joined Capita Business Services Ltd, in the UK, in August 2001 where he took on the role of Transition Director for the BBC TV Licensing contract, taking charge of one of Capita’s largest transition and transformation projects. He was responsible for a major IT Transition and, as Programme Director, the transformation of legacy systems to new modern technologies. He was subsequently appointed IT Director for Capita Insurance Services in August 2003 and Divisional IT Director for the Commercial Services division in 2005, before moving to Capita Life & Pensions as Director of Information Technology in 2007. Sal joined Vertex, a utility BPO, as interim CIO in 2009. He relocated back to South Africa in September 2010 to take on a role, at Absa, as Head of Strategy & Architecture in Retail Banking. He then joined Eskom as CIO in April 2012.

Within the UK, he held national and international roles and responsibilities and he has worked for all the major IT software integration and services companies in the UK, including, ICL (now Fujitsu), CSC, EDS, major BPO provider Capita Group, and BPO company Vertex. In South Africa, Sal has worked for Checkers, ICL, Absa (Barclays), and Eskom.

He is married with two children and enjoys gardening, gym, and the movies, and is an avid Manchester United fan having held a season ticket at Old Trafford for 25 years. One of his major objectives at Eskom includes the transformation, development, and building of IT skills, particularly in ERP, BI/MI COE, Testing, Collaboration, and Service Desk, within South Africa.


Isaac Maredi
Isaac Maredi
Chief Director: Sector Innovation and Global Change

Isaac is currently employed as Chief Director: Sector Innovation and Global Change in the Department of Science and Technology. His key responsibilities include managing a portfolio that provides policy and strategic direction, as well as agenda setting for building science, technology and innovation (STI) capabilities in the areas of information and communication technology (ICT), global change, environmental services and technologies – including using science, technology and innovation to support government’s imperatives on sustainable development and green economy. He is also instrumental in the development and implementation of DST’s initiatives aimed at attracting private sector to co-invest with government in R&D and innovation in order to enhance competitiveness of key economic sectors such as ICT, agriculture, manufacturing, maritime industries and mining; as well as guiding and supporting regional innovation programmes and activities at provincial and local levels.

Isaac recently led the development of South Africa’s ICT Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Roadmap which was approved by Cabinet in April 2013. He played a key role in ensuring the participation of all relevant stakeholders from government, private sector, academia, research institutions and civil society in the development of the ICT RDI Roadmap, which is now adopted as a planning framework that guides South Africa’s investment and decision making on priority areas in ICT R&D and innovation.

His keen interests are in ICT R&D and innovation policy development and implementation, development of strategic partnerships with ICT companies (multinationals and local) and international partners such as the European Union (EU), as a way of advancing South Africa’s ICT R&D and innovation agenda.

Isaac’s previous positions include: Director: ICT at the DST; Senior Specialist: R&D and Innovation at SITA; IT Project Manager at University of Pretoria; Senior Consultant: Application Development at Gijima. Prior to his career in ICT, he was a Mathematics Teacher at a few high schools in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

He holds the following qualifications: Master of Information Technology (MIT); BSc Computer Science and Statistics; Higher Education Diploma (HED); Secondary Teachers Diploma (STD)
